Will year-old seeds still sprout?

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

I just came across some seeds I got in trade last year, two packages. One's labeled simply "Brugmansia" and the other's labeled "Datura," but I know they're not. They look just like the others ~ tan, wrinkly and smaller than a pea. I'm going to try to grow 'em anyway, but would like to know ~ is there any hope for babies? Anything special I should do?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Wingnut, Soak them for 24 hrs and if they are big enough seeds you can peel the outer corky covering off of it and plant the little seed that is inside.

Franktown, CO(Zone 5a)

I planted some seeds I got over a year ago and they came up in 12 days. Give it a whirl!

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Cool! I hope I'll be able to give 'em a little bottom heat. Kenny and I have a couple ideas for homemade warming tables. If they work, I'll post about it here. And if the bruggies sprout, I'll DEFINITELY post about that here, too! Gotta' finish the greenhouse tomorrow, NOT next week! LOL!

'Night, y'all. (Sung to the tune of "White Christmas"): I'm dreaming of a brug babyyyyy...just like the ones that you all haaaaaave...When it's blooms start poppin', well, I'll be hoppin'...and tradin' to grow it companyyyyyyyyyyyy...

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

wingnut, send me your addy and I'll send you some nice seeds.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I want my pods to get ripe!!! I think I'm going to get out the Nu-skin and see if they are ready!!! TiG, come tape my hands so I will leave them alone!!

Settle down Cala.

FSH, TX

For what its worth, I have had seeds that were planted and watered sprout after a year. Hence, they could have germinated at any moment in the year long period. Most will sprout much sooner than that though and I find that the vast majority will sprout within the first 2 months.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Awesome! I'm so happy with this news! And y'all are so generous to offer me more seeds! I woke up this morning to tiG's thoughtful post and a message or two in my mailbox! Y'all made my day! I'm taking Sis to town today, so she'll hear all about it!! Gotta' tell Kenny as soon as he wakes up. I've been showing him pictures of brugs in full bloom and he loves them, too! Maybe the knowledge that we have seeds on the way will put a burr in his butt to get the g'house done. Tee-hee...

Cala, what's Nu-skin and how do you use it on brug seed pods?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

wingnut, did you find the post where it compares datura and brug seeds? It is just a page or two back, and you can start by seeing if the seeds you have are really brug seeds. Many many people trade daturas as brugs. Not their fault, seed companies are still getting it wrong, but we are trying to start fresh here. Then send me your addy:)

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Haven't found that one yet, tiG. I'll go look. I had to take my Sis to town ~ her son knocked out a front tooth and we had to take him to the dentist. He's fine now and so's mama (*grin*).

Yeah, I've seen some of that mislabeling in seed catalogs ~ bright pink daturas with blooms that hang down? No, don't think so. I was thinking that datura seeds are flat and more like pepper seeds, just bigger and thicker while brugs are wrinkly things, like small cork peas. I'll go look for that thread now...

BTW, tiG ~ you have mail. :-) Y'all are so cool!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thank you for this thread! I got out the seeds I have and now I know for sure that they are datura, not brugs. They look like the seeds I pick out of peppers. I'm learning, and now I know that I don't have any actual brug seeds. I would have to grow them as an annual here anyway, and I don't know if that would work. I think I can grow the datura as an annual though. If I'm wrong, please correct me. I'm still a newbie.

Joan,
Due to your cold weather you would have to bring your Brugs in where they wouldn't freeze. Think you might want to talk to some one in the same zone as you....maybe Snowhermit or Burgie.

Thanks Gloria!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Joan, You can grow Datura as an annual and save the seeds for the following year or bring them in as houseplants over the winter. The Brugs you can grow in large pots or if you put them in the ground you can dig them up in the fall, trim the roots and pot them up to bring in the house. You can also take cuttings off the Brugs in the fall, root them and grow them in the house. Our growing season is so short I think the Brugs need to be started early in the house or a GH to have enough time to flower and get a jump start on the growing season. We don't plant outside here until Memorial Day.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thank you so much Snowhermit! So I can grow Brugs as long as I bring them in! I can do that! Yayy! Now, where is the cheapest place to order them from? Is it better to start them from seeds or plants?

Joan,
It's kind of cold up in your area to be getting Brugs right now....but if you wait till spring there will be cuttings flying around here like crazy. I for one have tons of Insignis Pink Brug cuttings but so does everyone else. LOL
I can send you some seeds for the Insignis Pink for postage if you would be interested? Email me.

Snow is it to cold to be sending seeds up there now?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Native Habitat, Valley Grow and Logees have Brug plants. I don't know if they will ship this time of the year to our zone though. When the weather warms I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding some cuttings right here. Everyone here is very generous. I will have some cuttings and some seedlings that I'm growing now that I can share when the weather is warm enough to send them.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Oh! Glory and Snowhermit! You are both very kind. I'll email you both. Thank you so much for your patient help to a newbie northerner.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Glory, I think they'll be ok if you wrap in bubble wrap. I just sent some out to Canada and down south.Just don't leave them sitting in the mailbox if it's extremely cold. :)

Snow,
Thanks....how's the weather up your way?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

It's been snowing off and on all week. In the 20's today and the end of the week it's supposed to get into the low teens. We still have about 1 1/2 ft of snow on the ground. Sigh.....If only spring would come soon.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Snow
I wish down here in SE Texas that we would get some snow once and awhile. It was in the early 70's when it last snowed here (only about 4 or 5 inches. Don't get me wrong, I like Spring to start in March, but a little snow now would be wonderful.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Gee, It got up to 48 here today. It's still 27 now. We don't have any snow left either. I cleaned the rabbit cage today and it wasn't even frozen anymore. We are having an unusually warm and dry winter here. It is supposed to get cold the first part of next week though. I hope we do get some moisture. It's pretty dry and next summer isn't looking good either. Gonna take lots of water to keep things going.

Joan,
you got mail!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Under all the snow we have our ground isn't frozen which is a miracle for this time of year. It has been milder here too. We usually have temps of below zero by now but I guess Feb. is still coming. LOL I live in the mountains so it's always colder and more snow here than there is 10 miles down the road in town.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

I just watched the weather forcast for the next week, now mind you I am not bragging cause this could mean big trouble for us, but we are supposed to be in the upper 70's to low 80's through end of next week. I love this warm weather, but if we don't get some rain we will start having fires in Mar, just like we did 2 years ago. Mind you I don't like the cold amd wet(that's why I live in FL)but the fires are worse. I had fires not far from me last year in May, but then we got some rain so Jun wasn't bad with the fires. Anyone know how to do any rain dances. Maybe we can chant. Dee

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Supposedly we are suppose to have temeratures near 60 next week!

Dee,
Lets hope y'all get some rain....we had about 1 inch night before last..I think our rain fall is pretty much back to normal here.
It's supposed to be super weather here to for the next week.

CC, did you check out Watch Dog on the Canna info?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Not yet,had to work this morning(I hate this job)and then go shopping, just got on the puter, had to go here first! Was it bad?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

OK,just looked at it,makes me nervous just the fact that they have no photo of it,especially if you ordered one a few years ago.Guess I should skip that one ,huh?
