Accurate brug info? Where?

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

We've finally just about got the greenhouse done, so I can jump in with y'all soon! While I'm waiting these last couple of weeks, I'd like to learn about them before I get any. I can read through the past posts on this forum for cultivation info, but I'd like to find a site that has accurate pictures of the different types, varieties, colors, etc., so I can learn which is which. Any recommendations?

Also, this link shows a bloom that appears to be about 10" across. http://valleygrow.safeshopper.com/34/133.htm?551
Is that bloom really that big or is it the camera angle? If it's real, which varieties (besides the one in the pic, of course) have blooms this large? Oooeeeee, that's gorgeous! Is this grower reputable? I saw that he got two or three positive ratings in the Watchdog ~ anyone else care to comment?

Lastly, can anyone tell me the name of this virus everyone's talking about? I'd like to find out more info on it so I can make sure I'm not doing anything wrong, then report myself to the brug police so they'll give me a clean-paper like Calalily! ;-) Seriously, I have to add that I came back in here yesterday, just after the "Incident" and from what I can see (me being an objective person, I think), y'all tried your best to calm her down and be friends, but there was just nothin' doin' from her. Glad Dave stepped in so I didn't have to "meet" her.

Welcome wingnut. Her Website does have good pictures and fair information.(LBJ) Monikas has great pictures, someone needs to jump in here and give the link, but it's in German. You can copy and paste to a translator like Alta Vista, and they will translate the whole web page. Here is another site that's pretty good.http://www.erowid.org/plants/brugmansia/brugmansia_images.shtml
sorry, wrong link, but I fixed it.

Wingnut, i met you just after 9/11. Bottom line, i think she just didn't want us trading and not spending money with her. she had been coming back off and on for a while, always seemed to be on the attack.
Earl at valleygrow is top notch, but before you order, check around, people will have cuttings of some of the more common brugs.
it seems the main carriers of virus are the ones we can't grow anyway, won't take the heat, and aurea varieties. they say healthy plants won't show signs of virus if they have it. apparently vicki got a virus that hit her hard, some say if she had quarantined the plants she imported it wouldn't have spread. i am no expert on this.

Yes, that with Vicki sure is in many ways one long sad story :|

B. x candida, B. sanguinea and B. vulcanicola or other spp. doesn`t necessarly have to be infected from the Nursery, but regardless where these plants get infected, these will be the species that will reveal their infection before all other Brugs. It pays to be on the lookout for symptoms, insects etc., when you are out buying Brugs. B. aurea will be among the last. It is the strongest Brugmansia species I ever grown and it prefer neither cool or hot. Whereas cool loving species as B. sanguinea and B. vulcanicola often reveal severe symptoms in the summer period, heat loving species/ c.v.`s as B. x candida and B. versicolor will often only reveal if they carry an infection during the winter months.

Columbian Datura Virus is one of the viruses we discussed alot, but there are certainly several strains or Virus species outthere. Here are some links:

Here are the most common Datura and Brugmansia species and the range of virus species, these are susceptable too. It is many, but in practical garden growing many of these virus species are - to my knowledge - extremely rare.

Thank you ever so much, Calalily and especially Tonny! Exactly what I was looking for! See what I mean? After all that, y'all still will readily admit that Vikci has some good information on her sites ~ further proof that the attitude problem was not coming from you.

Arlene, I remember you! You're the lady who has the same name as the mother who sent her policeman-son's badge to President Bush! Great to see you again! I wanted to respond again to the nice e-mail you sent, but that was about the time DH got his own e-mail address and I was teaching him how to use Outlook Express. Betcha' can guess what happened next. ;-( So when I get ready for brugs, I don't have to stay in the closet about trading for them? Wonderful! I was afraid it wouldn't be done for a while.

Eric, maybe the Sibondoy species ain`t that far away. Lene and me talked about taking a vacation/collecting trip to Mexico, but she also find a collection trip to (dangerous) Colombia interesting. Mexico has its grand deserts, but nothing compared to the Carribean Sea costal lines of Colombia. The good news is that Colombian Pytovirus is not transmitted by seeds and by collecting seeds only and desinfect these effectively would in the theory create virus free seeds/plants.

The culebra and ocre we have already, but there are about twelfe more to go for and when I read, what kind of means transmit CPD it is piece of cake to clean the seeds. I don`t know why, but Kirchner in Germany has removed "Quinde" from their plant list for 2002, but then again I guess it will be nice to put on a tropical helmet and look for seeds of this one too. Think of also, how nice it would be to have seed grown culebras ... it is fairly easy to enter C. on turist travels for up to 3 months without Visa, but ... I am not sure, how to get the seeds out of there ... think I will wish for knee socks to my B-day :)

Well Wingnut....fancy meeting you here.I am still enjoying my plants that I received from you.The Blood lilies,Jujube etc are doing so well.I think of you every time I mail a package.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hi Wingnut....Great to see you here again. Tonny is really good at looking up everything people want to know. Cala is a peach and have to say that all in all, this is a great group of people. If I can help you out with anything, just let me know. Cuttings are slim right now since I live in the north, but will sure share later on.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey, Gone2seed! Thought I recognized your name, but tweren't sure you were the same! It's nice to hear that you're happy with the oxbloods and the jujube! How tall is the jube now? After I dig babies, I keep mine mowed around to contain it so don't know just exactly how fast they grow in the ground.

Hey, Brugie! Nice to see you again, too! Yeah, Tonny's a keeper! And I thought Cala was a lily? *gro-o-o-oan* ;-) Thanks for the offer of cuttings! Sounds like when you'll have enough to share will be just about the time I'll be ready for them! You're too kind! Yes, it seems like a great group with a few new faces I haven't met yet, but they just add to the groupness...uh...greatness. In all seriousness, I think I'm gonna' like it here again...a LOT.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Wingnut - Glad to have you here. You will not find a better group of people anywhere and they are so knowledgeable and experienced - - a valuable asset to us "newbies." I just joined DG this month and I feel that I have been here a long time. Glad to see someone from TEXAS!! Where is Spicewood? I live south of Houston. Later in the year, I will be able to help you with cuttings. I have just gotten started so it will be a while before I can help new members but I do look forward to that day.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi, BrugNanny! I've been to Alvin! I've got kin in Texas City! You're too kind for the offer of cuttings! I'll take you up on it when the time is right! Yeah, this place is great, isn't it? Feels like I've never been gone.

Spicewood's just west of Austin, about 50 miles out. REALLY nice place! The people are so friendly and the air is clear.
Here's a link to some pics of my creeks (they feed Krause's in the links below): http://www.moment.net/~wingnut/mainpics.htm
Some pics of Krause's Springs, a campground and swimming hole just across my back fence: http://www.randybrewer.net/images/Photos/Krause-Springs-1.jpg http://www.randybrewer.net/images/Photos/Krause-Springs-2.jpg
And this site, shown me by DGmember Copperbaron, talks about a place just 10 miles towards Austin from me (describes the attitude around here really well): http://www.golftexas.com/reviews/pedernales1.htm
I live in Heaven!

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow! It is beautiful - lucky you. A wooded area and creeks - what a peaceful atmosphere. Next time you are my way, come by. I know a lot of people in TC. My hubby worked there for 30+ years. An uncle of mine lives in Moore which should not be too far from you. Small world!!!
