Tonny -Question regarding Monika's brugs

Hamilton, Canada

Does Monika list the cultivar or parentage of her brugs.

"Mobisu" green throat with band of orange on petal tips. Is this a B. X sanguinea?

"Salzchlirf" white with orange/peach stripe in interior of flower. Is this B X candida?

"Lamour" -? reddish color. Is this a B. X sanguinea?

"Favorite's Delight". Is this one a B. X Candida?

Monika does unfortunately not list the parents of the crosses, which I had also hoped she would. It can be a tough assignment to sort out the history and hybridizer names for all known hybrids ... I dream of doing this one day :)

"Mobisu" is a arborea x sanguinea hybrid

"Salzchlirf" is a x candida hybrid (standart sortiment in Denmark, - sold here as plain "Datura" *lol*).

"Lamour" is an aurea hybrid

"Favorite's Delight". is listed as a suaveolens-hybrid

Tonny,
Thanks very much. I spend lots of time looking at Monika's brugs over and over and over again. This morning I took out Priessel's book (now my Brug Bible) and compared descriptions from the book to Monika's Brug pictures. The ones that really caught my eye were the four that I inquired about.

Monika emailed me this afternoon and this is what she sent to me:

Mobisu = B. x flava x B. sanguinea
Kurpark Bad Salzschlirf = B. x candida
L`Amour = Multihybrid
Favorite's Delight = B. insignis x B. suaveolens

I thought Vicki Hardings website was "The Brug Bible" :)

I prefer Monika`s book as my Brug Bible. Se is doing a great, honest work. Did you know that she created it from the scrape just from experiences with the plants in her own garden? :D

I glanced rather quickly through Dr. Preissel`s book when buying it for an American friend, but only remember is scarcely. However I am not too impressed by Dr. Preissels book just for the reason Dr. Preissel write that viruses can`t be carried in Brug seeds. I don`t know how he got that idea. Only a few satelites in a few chromosomes separates the Genus Datura from Genus Brugmansia and I know of own experience that Dats can. Of cause I hope I am mistaken, but within this or next month I will transfer plantcells of the Datura seeds to a brugseed and see what happen. When the Dat seed germinated I will also transfer plantjuice from this to a healthy self fertile brug seedling to determine, if its next generation of seeds are infected. This will be the foolprof way to know :}

Tonny,
I also visit Vicki's website, but she does not ship internationally so that leaves me out. I look there primarily for her images and then see if I can find them somewhere else that ships to Canada. Vicki has the L'Amour that I like and I found it at Monika's. A lot of Vicki's brugs I can buy from Jeanne or Liz in Vancouver.

I tried to find Kirchner's webpage but it won't load for me for some reason. Do you know of any other places in Europe with Brugs? I found a place in France, but they carry what Monika has at about double the price. I need to get my applications for Import Permits out by the end of this month before the greenhouse import season starts here in February.

Priessel's book is all I have access to although I would love Monika's book if it were translated into English. It would be a good reference book for European varieties. I find the same is true for the most part with Priessel's book...wish there were more images for both Brugs and Daturas...guess that is my only regret.

A friend did send me a link to another website that has more images of brugs so I'm getting a better idea of what some of these brugs look like. In addition, more people on this forum are posting pictures of what they have in their collections and that helps too.

Thanks again.

Tonny, Just rec'd an email from Monika regarding virus. She says brugmansia seeds are free of virus and can be soaked in a disinfectant to kill any virus which might be attached to the outside.( which is not likely)

Hamilton, Canada

Brugcrazy,
This is good news. If any country's concern regarding importing Brugs lies in bringing viruses into the country this is certainly important. Perhaps seeds should all be soaked in a disinfectant when they are shared. Viruses if they exist do not show up early on.
Joydie

Monika also said that in her country the only brugs with viruses are sanguinea and vulcanicola. That's it. So I don't think we have to get too, too worried about this if we take proper precautions with cleanliness etc. Those two are prone to viruses so extra care should be taken with them.

Brugcrazy, thanks for the info.

The exact same thing is said about Datura seeds. That is also why Datura and Brugmansia seeds are allowed entry into the US with a PC, but never will be PQ. These can`t carry an infection inside the seeds, but I am posetive mine does. - but of cause to be sure I will put your and Monikas knowledge to use and make a test experiment with the infected Datura seeds.

I`ll take 2 x 100 seeds.

The 100 seeds in group 1. will be disinfected entirely on the outside and sown in desinfected soil in a sterilized, closed environment.

Group 2. will be sown the usual way with no treatment and are used as control group.

I start tomorrow. If I can get the heater turned up, I will have a clear answer to the question regarding Datura seeds very soon.

The question of Brugseeds will then be answered next. It will take a couple of years to do the experiments. If the brugs seeds are able to carry the virus inside seeds, we are maybe dealing with a new form of virus or maybe an old one that no one cared to look for, because everyone thought this couldn`t happen in a million years *lol*

If my experiment turn up the answers I fear (and I hope Monika is right I can assure you), then I will forward the diseased materials in order to have this virus strain analysed.

btw. I am soon purchasing a new vulcanicola hybrid ... did Monika say something about all sangs and vulcs being infected or ... ? - guess is necessary I will grow them in my other garden where I grow the risky stuff :)

Oh, Thanks so much Tonny. Now I will be spending some time studying and drooling.

Well, I can understand you. I drooled over her brugs as soon as this evening. When you are finished drooling too, please let me know, what you think of her hybrids :D

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Wow, That red one is a stunner!! oh,they all are but I am assuming the red and the orange one are her babies. Since I don't read German, I feel handicapped. How much would that thing be?? I also really like the Lamour, Rosalie, Apricot and Velvet Lady - but I know these are more common.

Azalea,

Aren't they gorgeous. I keep looking at the one with the green throat and the other one with the stripe inside that's why I wanted to know what strains they were. Many of her Brugs have single, double and triple flowers with 3 different colors blooming all at once on the same plant. Now that is what I call stunning!!

OK all, I am trying to understand all the posts on import/export, and it is most likely that I don't, can we or can we not order any of Monika's brugs. She has some gorgeous ones. Dee

Hamilton, Canada

DeeinFla,
I'm in Canada and here we are allowed to import/export brugs to and from Europe.

Joydie

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

we're allowed, it just costs more than it used to Dee!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I still can't figure out who,or how to get the importers permit.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

CC, Are you in the upper or lower end of NY?

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Do you have to get an import/export permit everytime you order or is it like good for a year or some such thing. Also do you get this permit from your state or just pay say Monika the cost of the permit. Some of hers looks like they might be worth it; if it isn't an arm and a leg. I think I would pay the leg, but not the arm, need that for the flower digging. Dee

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Snow,I'm north of Syracuse which is considered central N.Y. state

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

CC, I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can get those permits needed. You're not too far away from me that I can't take a ride over and drool over all those Euro Brugs in bloom. Just make sure to check all my pockets before I leave. LOL

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I'm workin on it!!!I'll have a brug detector at the door!!!LOL
