planting by almanac

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Does anyone else out there plant according to the almanac? We started doing this a few years ago and I perosnally think it helps. I use to think I couldn't grow a marigold, but I've had some gorgeous flowers since I really got more serious with gardening and using the almanac.

Ginger
When I was growing up our next door neighbor always planted by the moon. Root crops by the dark of the moon above ground crops by the light of the moon.

She always had the best vegatable garden you ever saw.
I really think there is something to it.

If you really want to "prove" it to yourself, plant a tomato seed on a day to plant root crops. You will get a very beautiful bushy plant but no tomatoes. Not even one. i was raised planting by the almanac and still do. Follow the flower planting days for more blooms and larger flowers. Some signs are water signs and some are barren signs.Don`t plant on a barren sign but kill weeds on that sign. Can`t beat it. Try it and prove it to yourself.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I use Blum's Almanac and they have it all figured out for you already. When to plant root crops, above ground, flowers, seed beds, prune to grow, prune to discourage growth, when to apply organic and chemical fertilizer, when to weed, etc. Sometimes it's tough to get things done on the right day, but I rarely do it if not the right sign. We do dental work and surgeries by the signs too. I have noticed that either right after or on the transplant days, it will rain. Amazing isn't it?

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow, I wonder if my doctor consulted the almanac! I have used it sort of lackadaisically in gardening, but forgot about the health area. It will be interesting to look back and check out my health events of the last year, with an eye to the almanac.

If you have to cut a hog or horse or bull always do it as near the feet (pisces) as possible. There will be no blood. This also works for getting a tooth pulled. If the sign is in the heart the animal will bleed to death.

Was really interested to find this thread. Missed it as i've only just joined you all. I posted similar subject in UK forum (Gardening by the moon and traditional festivals) - spose the title was enough to put anyone off LOL! Seeing your comments, will have to give it a try.

philomel, I had brain surgery in 98 and was out of the hospital after 3 days and back carrying trees out of the woods(we make white oak baskets) in 3 weeks. I was very careful though. My husband had his last 10 teeth pulled and dentures put in the same day and had very little blood and very little problems adjusting to the dentures.

It's tough to get all the flower work done on the right days when you have to work, but I really believe it works.

Ginger, you've been through a lot!! are you saying that these things were timed to coincide with good biorhythms and that made the difference??

Here is one great site:

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Yes, Phil, I would think that is the case. Notmartha, I use Blum's Farmer's and Planter's Almanac (orange cover). They already have gardening days figured out for you. You have to figure out your own medical stuff though. It's not that hard. Some things can get a little complicated when you have to add in the phases of the moon and the signs at the same time. But sounds like you have time to do that while sitting in the bleachers. They also have a website www.blumsalmanac.com. By the way, I haven't forgotten about the harlequin glorybower. I'll get to it one day.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Great site!
Gingerlily-we were trading for horseradish root(?)
I think this all makes alot of since-Im going to try this way of planting. Thanks everyone!

Why don't you put a weekly reminder for those of us who are too lazy to look it up? You know, "this week is right for planting potatoes until Friday, and in the south, beets and carrots."

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Ok Aimee, here's the first installment. I'll probably forget to do it eventually.
This week--14, 15 plant above ground crops
11 plant root crops
14,15 transplant days
11 prune to encourage growth
13,16 prune to discourage growth
14, 15 apply chemical fertilizer

I did notice that the days are about one offset of the link gardendragon posted. That's always been curious to me that different almanacs will be just off from each other a little. I guess you just pick one and hope they're close enough to be successful.

Well, I have always had my good intentions... I even went so far last year to make a chart, not only of the moon, but also the astrological signs. However, I learned a chart isn't worth hooey if you cannot fit it into your schedule, alas.

Nonetheless, seems like a good and logical idea!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I'm with you darius.....too busy trying to ward off all the other problems of gardening to stick to a schedule..just do it the way it was explained to me......LOL....but I do get grand enjoyment from it, and after all...isn't that all that's important in the larger scheme of things?

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

Shucks, I missed the date for pruning the peach trees. As I have several, and not enough energy to do them all in a day, I will lp away on whatever day it falls and hope for the best. As the coons get the crop anyway, why should I care?

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Aimée... u still got 2 chances to prune for growth. Feb. 16, and 25th. if u're referring to prune to discourage growth, then u are right.... next one is on Mar. 5 & 6.

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

So today, maybe. Wish me luck, it's a little breezy and colder than was predicted here.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

yes! definitely today is the day. i have to do a lot of pruning & propagating too. sort of breezy too but no strong winds in sight!

I tried to find Blum's Almanac at Amazon.com, but there's nothing listed for this year. Am I missing something here?

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Well, it's more of a small magazine than book. Any really good magazine stand ought to have it. Or go to blumsalmanac.com and see if you can order it, I don't remember.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Gingerlily ~ didn't realize it was a magazine type. Thought of the traditional Farmer's Almanac & considered that this may be the same. I'll be looking for it in the morning!

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I checked the website, and you can order a three year subscription for $8 I believe it was. You can also see the current month's gardening dates on the website. Click on gardening tips.

Dayton, OH(Zone 5a)

Awesome ~ thanks! I looked today at our local resource for magazines & books. They didn't even find it in their system! I'm hopping over to the Blum web site right now.

Cricket shared this with me:

April 5,6,7 are very productive. Sow all seeds especially.
April 13 plant flowers for more frangrance.
April 14,15,16, are very productive for all plantings.

Frankfort, KY

I was ten years old when my brother was born, but I had never heard of the Almanac. When my mother wanted to wean him, our nanny told her to wait until the stars were in the feet. Every morning I looked at his feet because I expect stars to appear. They never did.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

That's a good one! Seems like a lot of people use this as well as "Lunar Gardening" but I couldn't find much info on Daves except the links that Gary posted.

Anybody?

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Thanks, MaVie

I guess I'll go plant some lettuce.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

u're very welcome Arlene. there are lots of almanac and lunar planting on DG Forum, so far those are the best i could find. both type of planting works for me. hope those links help.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

I guess I am going to have to spend some time studying it and maybe buy some books on it.

Thanks again!
