I have tried Gunnera several times. While it is hardy for our zone I think it is too hot/humid in the summers here for it.

You can start it indoors. Thats how I started some of mine and they did well until being planted out. I also tried purchasing plants from Homestead but not much luck at keeping them alive, no matter what I did for it. I think there may be only 1 that hasn't totally died off, will have to wait and see.

How did you start yours?I just found some seeds and are about to start them.

They are pretty easy, sow, thinly cover and keep warm. Bottom heat will speed up the germ process but not necessary.

I don't think it is hardy to zone 5 though.

Gunna try it anyhow,I have areas that never freeze in my garden, trying some zone 6&7 in them

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

If Gunnera is hardy to Finland, it is hardy to zone 4! They have a huge Gunnera in the Hki Botanical..

maybe there are more than 1 variety,I've seen it listed hardy to zone 5 and some hardy to zone 7
