Squirrel problems!!!

Altamonte Springs, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi y'all.....

Just thought you might find this interesting. We have bunches of squirrels here and they were rooting (no pun intended) around in my potted plants......little holes I could accept....but when I walked out the other morning and found two brug pots dug out on one side to the bottom and the dirt on the ground and roots disturbed..........I went CADDYSHACK........remember when they were fighting the gophers???

But I remembered reading somewhere that squirrels hate blood meal.......and since i had a a bag of that i sprinkled some in each pot and around the areas the plants are kept......haven't had a squirrel near them in five days....just thought i would share this with everyone!!!

I had this problem last fall - the blood meal works wonders doesn't it.

How about rabbit problems? I have tried everything under the sun but not Blood meal...think it will get rid of those creatures?

Caddyshack is DH's favourite movie. LOL

Gloria,
My MIL uses it for rabbits all the time. They will enhale her tulips and daffs in the spring without the bloodmeal.

Hmm. Wonder if it would work on moles if sprinkled around the garden. They love to eat my lily bulbs.

Nope, won't work on the moles (actually voles are eating th lily bulbs, they use the mole runs to move around) Putting gravel or chicken wire around the bulbs will help discourage them, but a cat is all that's going to kill the voles.

Thanks for the tip - will try it in the hole in my bedroom wall!! They seem to have developed a taste for the Red Pepper we sprayed in there.

Thanks Cala, I guess I'll put the wire around them this spring.

I use the dried blood and sprinkle it on anything the deer want to eat.Keeps them away - till it rains and washes it of.They don't eat meat and are repeled by the blood smell, same with rabbits.....

You know what works for moles? I found out last year when we went to Netherlands. There are lots of them there. Just about every house has a castor bean plant. The bean or roots (not sure which) sends out something that moles don't like and keeps gardens critter free. Just a note, they are toxic though.

Thanks orphanAnnie, I'll have to get some castor seeds and plant 3 or 4 around the whole yard. We have lots of those destructive critters and they have done so much damage. Last winter they killed my Azalea bush and have ate many bulbs that I planted through the years. In the spring I have mounds of dirt all over my front yard.
