Trading Seeds

Kuna, ID

Does anyone use binomial nomenclature on a consistant basis out there? I am a botanist looking for someone who can use dichotomous keys for sending me known seed samples in trade for known seed samples. I am particularly interested in weed seeds. I am currently a Seed Analyst for the State of Idaho. I am trying to add new species to our herbarium that we do not already have. Anyone interested or am I just weird?

Hi mgerdes and welcome to DG! Did you say you want weed seeds? Well, you hit the mother lode!!! I have enough weeds and weed seeds in my yard to plant your whole herbarium. :)

You don't plant an herbarium, an herbarium is a place where plants/seed is kept for centuries as reference material. plants are pressed and mounted. Seeds are identified placed in a vial and placed in a draw. I am not going to plant these weed seeds, I am a plant/seed systematist. I identify, catalog and manage the herbarium here at the state. This is great, I know of some species I need from georgia. I don't have a contact in the southeast. Great on the motherlode, I could use quantity to teach other seed analysts. I am currently coordinating a seed school for april 2,3,4. so after that I can trade and talk, but until then I am teaching 4 classes. talk to you soon terri and thanks for the welcome, its always nice.

Michael,

Do you need any weeds, seeds and stems from New York. I'm in the far western part of the state - known in the dairy industry as the beginning of the "mideast".

Sounds like you're busy, but the great thing about this place is that we are here.

just a note about the weather - we are still experiencing a lot of snow. I hope April to be better.

mgerdes,

I used to work for the state of ND as a seed analyist, but that was many years ago. If I can send you any seeds let me know.

Hi, My son has a collection of weed seed, which he is forever collecting. He purchased an abandoned farm with acreage in mid Iowa.He wants to return the land to native plants and grasses. He goes up and down gravel and unpaved roads looking for weeds and wildflowers he doesn't have. So perhaps he can be of some help when you are ready. Doris

I live in SW PA in mts at near 3000 ft also within driving distance of dolly Sods where unusual Alpine plants grow that are found in the artic. Weeds also do you believe might be unusual?

Lorain, OH(Zone 5b)

I'm from OH & I'd love to help you out. Believe it or not I have OH weed seeds. I personally love Queen Anne's lace, I plant Dandy Lions to feed my Iguana, Plantains for burns & stings & I save Joepie weed for trades.(I'm currently out of Joepie weed, but will have some in the fall) I'm sorry that I do not know thier Latin names. I plant weeds in my garden because my lawn is so full of clover that it chokes-out the weeds.

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

I would love to help you out, but unfortunately, I don't know the latin names. If I am able to find that info to definitly identify, I'll let you know. I'm on the panhandle of Florida.

You can all contact me at my work email address which is mgerdes@usda.state.id.us Remember this is my work email address but this is my work. My goal is to create a large diversity of families and species of seeds in our herbarium that will help us make identifications. Don't worry, I will trade with you all. if you could and want to trade please send me an email at my work address with the following information. Your name, email address, location in the world, please be specific on that part.
thanks for all your interest. Thanks for pushing science a little bit forward. I will talk to you all about pressing the plants and making labels. this way I can identify the plant and find out if I need to take the plant further than species, and or misidentifications.

Forest City, NC(Zone 7a)

I live in N.C. if you know if something you need.

Dexter, MI(Zone 5b)
