My First seed sprouts of Suaveolens!!!

Hamilton, Canada

This evening I checked my pots after reading an email from Callalily. I have 2 tiny little sprouts from seeds that I planted early last week. Now I have to be patient to let them develop to the second true leaves before I pot them into small pots from the seed tray.

I'm so excited I can't believe it!! I DID IT!!!

Joydie, isn't it exciting!! You're on your way to another obsession!! Seed starting. Congratulations.

Cala,
I'm shocked at how fast the seedlings grow. I had to gently pick off the seed from the end of the leaves. I think next time I'm going to be sure to soak the seeds. I didn't soak these ones.

Wow ,they came up really fast, were they fresh?

Crestedchick,
No the seeds were not fresh. I got them back in October. I do however have them on a heating mat.

I have come to think that a heating mat is the secret to getting brug seeds to sprout. I have tried without a heating mat, and it takes forever, if at all, to get them to sprout:) But it seems that most people, with a few exceptions, don't mention using a heating mat when giving planting instructions.

Owen, I don't use a heating mat but I keep them next to my woodstove which keeps the soil warm. You can also put them on top of your refrigerator or somewhere that stays warm.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I never used a heating mat until it got so cold here in the house. 99% of the seeds I've planted before the cold came up with about 85-95% germination rates. I've got some on a heat mat now, but it isn't getting me the 3 day to 2 week rate I had when it was warm. I've planted about 300 seeds or more before this, so I don't think using a mat is a hard and fast rule. If it was that important, it would have been mentioned, I think's it more a time of year thing. Planted seeds from LBJ, 95% g. rate, seeds from Eric, 95% g. rate, Gloria, so far 80% but it hasn't been long, CC 80% g. rate, Cala, 85%. Seeds on mat - first try - less than 25%, trying again and don't know.

(Zone 6a)

hmmmm glad to hear that information. maybe it was just the particular batches of seeds I was trying to get to germinate. I have about a dozen seeds left from what Eric sent me, so will try again....on top of refrigerator this time:) have not tried to germinate any from this particular batch before (sent all but a dozen to various people).

Here we go again. I think it might be a personal preference thing. I use the mat and have it set at 75* and have been having good luck so far. Now that I've said that, my next batch of seeds probably won't sprout. Now for a question.....Why, when peeling the cork off some seeds is the embryo already showing? I've found that in a lot of seeds and those seeds don't appear to go ahead and germinate.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

brugie, no arguement, I think it's not only personal preference, but each person plants a certain depth, waters a certain amount, etc. so what works for me may never work for anyone else. perhaps that seed, and I've seen a couple, was the first one made and is the oldest?? just a guess.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

It always makes me think that I didn't get them planted quick enough or something. I doubt that I'll be short of seedlings in any case.

Brugie.....would love to have a few seeds from the pod that gave you Tragedy, if you have any to spare. I think those would be excellent for getting not only white brugs, but also many colorful ones (just a hunch, from the parentage).

By the way, has anyone heard from Eric? Have not seen any posts in here from him recently.

TiG,
These seeds I planted were over 3 months old, at least I had them 3 months before I planted them...have no idea when they were harvested, just assumed they were harvested in 2001. I'm sure that fresh seeds will sprout much faster. I put these on heat as the seeds were old in comparison to what I've seen regarding planting brug seeds right away.
I'm sure they will sprout either way.

To everyone who cares........... I just heard that Eric, along with at least one other person, is not posting in here because of me. With this in mind, since Eric is the creator of this thread.....and the people in here want him to post....after all, he is THE most expert brug person in here, and his input is invaluable, I have decided to bow out for good. In the future, I will keep private email constructive criticism to myself, because it can not be trusted to be kept private by some "adults". I hope the brug forum can return to it's former carefree, happy and informative atmosphere now.....really:)

And no, I am not divulging my latest source of information, in public or in private!

If anyone cares to keep in touch via private email....please do. I will keep reading the posts, but this time, I mean it, I will do no posting, for any reason, in this forum. My loss, but not to worry, such is life:)

Owen,

I don't know where you got your information and I won't ask, but I certainly hope that Eric will continue posting no matter what. Everyone has something good to add to the posts in here. Yes, I'll send you some of my Tragedy seeds. I just hope they are still good.

Brugie,
What are "Tragedy" seeds? Are those from a cross that you did?
Joydie

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Joydie, yes they are from a cross that the moths did, but I'm 99% sure of the two parents. The seeds are over a year old. I have some planted and others on damp p. towels in a baggie waiting to see if they are viable. I've heard that the seeds are good for a couple of years, so I guess time will tell.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Ms. Brugie, where did Shirley's peach come from? forgot to tell you, pods fell off my tragedy, biggest one today. won't be long before they make more though, gonna put it in a bigger pot in the sunshine!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Arlene,

Shirley's Peach is the one a friend gave me but had it tagged as a Versicolor Peach. Definitely NOT a versicolor. It is the same one, I think, that was shown on Victory Garden about a month ago and he called it versicolor peach also. I told Jim that I was going to write VG and tell them they better research their plants a little better. :-)
