OK, I did it. I took the cuttings that were really long and laid them on their sides. I found these great pots in DH's stash of green house supplies at the garden center. I don't think he will miss a half dozen or so!! Thsi is before I covered them with soil. I thought I took a picture of that, but guess I didn't have one.

cuttings
Wow Cala, That looks like a great way to mass produce them. LOL
I'm trying that with some of mine too,I like those oblong shaped pots ,they look perfect for it!
Cala, can I ask why you aren't cutting them at individual nodes? I know you've done that before, so I know you have a reason. I am going to do one piece of my butterfly today and would love to know before I do it, thanks.
TiG, I was afraid to chop it up. I'm new to this method of rooting cuttings. Wish Eric lived closer!! I did cut one variety of them up because I had more stems. I may cut up one of the JO/CG if I can find a stem without a seed pod. (hey, good excuse to open a pod!!) You guys are more "experts" than I am. I'm just listening and learning.
this afternoon I think I'll look around and see what I can take a green cutting from and a party woody cutting. Will make notes so I can keep track of what I've done. Planning on cutting one node to a cutting though. I want to get some of these divided now so they will be much bigger before spring.
I think I'm gonna try it too. I was chicken before. Do you soak the stem in water first?
One node to a cutting sounds like the best method. Would preclude having to make diagonal cuts in the soil later on:)
Unless my feeble mind is missing something:)

Owen,
That's what I do....some of my cuttings can be only 1/2" long...it's amazing how may cuttings you can get out of a small cane.
Guess I should explain a little further on the 1/2 in cuttings....I only root them that small when demand is higher then supply. LOL

Glory,
whoaaaaaaaaa don't make the cuttings that small as they will need to heal at the ends...the smallest they can be is about 2"-3". Any smaller and by the time both ends heal you won't have anything left to sprout!!!
Joydie
actually joydie, Gloria is a great hybridizer and pretty much knows what you can and can't do with brugs. I'm going to cut mine that size.
wanted to add that I've done the horizonal cuttings and the ends didn't heal on them first, I've never let any ends heal. have had a high success rate.

Cala,
looks like you will get lots of plants from those "logs", They look to be about the same length of the logs that I started with. You can also take them and place them in water that barely covers the underside of the logs.
Within a couple of days they will form white "bumps" that are the root nodes.
When the root nodes start to show, place the log on the soil and cover half of it.
When the green shoots sprout then cover the entire log with soil and more green shoots will come up from the top of the log besides the bottom of the log...I hope this makes sense.
Joydie
I already have way too many cuttings standing upright in the GH. I have buckets full of rooted cuttings of CG, FP, and others not planted up yet. I was planting up flavas last night that had hundreds of roots about 4" long on them from sitting in water. Don't think I'll do horizontal cuttings, I wouldn't know where to put them.
I'm trying a few like Cala is doing hers. I figured by the time the sprouts get up and going and the log is deep in the soil each sprout will root and then I can cut them off the log. They have to be started in a deep pot I would think so the soil can be brought higher as the sprouts grow. Never hurts to try things a new way. Besides, it helps cut the boredom problems in mid-winter.
S.
That is why I'm trying these, boredom!! Some of these were already rooted on the ends, so I didn't want to lay them in water. I've got some JO/CG cuttings I may experiment with. I don't mind if they don't make it. I also cut off some stems with pods in varying size to see if I could root them and still keep the pods. So far, so good.
wasn't thinking clearly when I said I didn't let any of mine heal. duh!!! but the heals I've checked on are barely 1/4" long. So after vic leaves this afternoon, yes!! another DGer coming :) I'm going to see what I can take and cut really short. If I don't do it wrong, I'll start my butterfly cuttings this way.
didn't Eric say once that he ran some over with a lawnmorer and left them laying on the ground and they sprouted?? don't think the size would matter much if there is a node to stat a sprout or root
Irish, yes he did say this, said he got hundreds of babies (don't think he wanted them). He has also told me, if insecure about rooting, which i was after killing some special cuttings, i could plant the V under the ground, several plants grow up, and you cut through later when they are mature enough you can't kill them and i guess the original stem isn't as hard, which as you know, down here in the summer (march to november), you can go from fresh cutting to 2-3 foot plant with some kinds. those little babies can be rooted too, saw a culebra (supposed to be hard to root) that wasn't an inch tall and was already rooted. i believe i got a rooted whiskers from Glory that i could tell started from a less than a 2 inch cutting, will be glad when i catch up with her and others experience. Brugman knows things the people in the Pressiel book either don't know or didn't write about.

Arlene - I took a bazillion cuttings in the fall off my big brugs. Jammed them 5-6 to a gallon pot. The only ones that failed were the ones that the V was below soil level. I'm talking the easy ones. Seemed one side of the fork shrivelled while the other side thrived. The forked ones that had the V just above the soil did well. Could be just me though ~~
Liz, I've found that to be true too.
Liz and Cala,
I had the same problem but I have so many cuttings it doesn't matter to me.
Glory,
I feel I need to be humbled...I hope you don't take offense to my post about the size of your cuttings...duh, like I should know and I'm a Newbie.
Joydie
joydie,
I am a thick skinned old girl....no offense taken....:0)
I noticed several sprouts coming up thru the soil already!! Of course some of these had been in an upright postition in a 4.5" pot.
