Here is why I can't go into the Jungle House without wanting to just rip those pods open and plant the seeds. The seeds at the bottom are from the pods I opened early. I took this just before planting them. I will let everyone know how they do.
lotsa pods
OH MY! ( OK - I meant something a little stronger) Very nice~~~~
I'd be in there pinching and poking.Even my DH says no matter how mant times I check on my pod its not going to ripen any faster!Whats the saying"A Watched Pod Never Ripens" oh,I'm sorry,a watched pot never boils huh???
CC, Bill says that to me too!! He said if I wouldn't look at them for a week or so they would ripen faster!! I can't help it, but yesterday I did good. I was so busy repotting those cuttings, I left the pods alone. I've also got some seeds planted that I can sit and stare at :^)
I started soaking seeds yesterday so I'm planting them today.I built that seed stand that poppy had plans for.I built that one because I could make it out of junk that was laying around.I'm going to make the pvc one too but gotta wait a week or two.Gotta stay away from the pod!
Cala, If I had that many pods I'd probably weigh twenty pounds less just from running out to check them every 5 min.It seems everyone is getting a touch of cabin fever. I find myself checking the seeds I planted about every 5-10 min to see if another one might have sprouted.
I'm so glad I'm "normal", lol. I do that too!! Don't know how fast I think they should sprout, but every now and again I find a new sprout. It's so exciting, like when your dog has puppies!! (except Wally is a boy and won't be having any)
Brugcrazy, I know what some of them are. I wrote on the stems, but in the high light in the green house, I can't read most of them now :-( because they have faded so badly. I know who the momma is, but not the papa.
I drug my DH out to the greenhouse to verify that my pod is attached to the stem by a yellowing stem. He agreed!! I will pick soon. Yipeeee
Waaaaaaaah, I want a ripe pod!!! I checked my EP pods yesterday and I "think" they may have a touch of yellow in the stem. Of course, I could just be hoping. The pod was a little "squishier" (is that a word?) than it was the day before. If a pod doesn't get a yellow penduncle soon, I may have to go to Ohio and pick Deanne's. Now just where is Fairborn? Deanne, do you work all day? Any biting dogs?
WOW lots of pods plus you will have tons of seeds!!
Calla,no pod snatching!!!,sounds like a movie "Invasion of the pod snatchers"
Calla, all I have are dachshund ankle bitters...you're getting some of my seeds anyway. I'll take a pic and post to get everyone's expert opinion. Think yellow!
Cala,
I'm looking at those seeds you have a picture of and the other picture that someone posted of datura and brugmansia seeds and now I'm thinking that what I got from a trade NOT brugmansia suaveolens but some sort of datura. I guess I will have to wait until the set of true leaves develop to know for sure. I'm going to be bummed out if it turns out that they are datura seeds. I'm hoping I didn't get them from the same person that you got your mislabelled seeds from.
Joydie
Joydie,
There is a posting on the forum showing the difference in the seeds....I think Snowhermit posted it.
Joydie, are the stems a little purple tinted? If so they are datura. Also datura have a "smell" to them. I think it's unpleasant and haven't noticed it with the brugmansias. They are probably too small, but when they get true leaves you can just touch them enough to bruise a little and the smell is noticable.
joydie, it's happened to several of us. brug seeds look like wood chips sortof, and daturas look like a teardrop seed. I don't think the white datura I grew had a purple stem though, but the purple did.
the yellow does, and I'm trying to remember if the white one did. You are probably right TiG. I was thinking yellow.
Cala and TiG,
The stem came up with a slight purple tint. I looked at the seed picture that Snowhermit posted and the seeds I planted look like the datura. These are definately NOT brugmansia seeds although this person I got them from posted that they were Brugmansia suaveolens. Now I'm sooooo disappointed. I traded huge amounts of my seeds for them and many of my really rare seeds that I bought from eBay.
I'm so disappointed that i don't even care how many of them come up...I traded for over 60 of these flipping seeds!! I already have datura seeds coming out my ears and these were going to be my first brug seeds.
From now on I'm going to make sure that I trade brug seeds through this forum only so I know that I'm getting the right kind of seeds. Does anyone know a company or eBay seller who ships Brug seeds to Canada and have them properly identified?
Now I'm going to have to go for therapy to deal with my loss..hahaha
Joydie
Oh my that would make me sick. I'm sure one of the gals in Canada will have some seeds some time and there must be several up there that would trade cuttings. Hate to see you not have the seed babies though. Now, what are you going to do with another 60 datura plants? They will be blooming by the time you can plant them outside, won't they?
Wish we could send you seeds from down here, but don't think that will happen after the 22nd.
Brugie, you can send seeds OUT, just can't bring them in.
Joydie, I quit trading for brug seeds except here because I was tired of getting datura (some were just plain old Jimpson Weed!!) If you got them from the same person I did, (she said they were suaveolens white), she KNOWS that's not what they are!!
Okay, guess there has been so much reading that I'm not comprehending well. Can we still send plants to Canada though? I guess I don't understand what the difference would be when it comes to brugs. Plants or seeds could be virused, couldn't they? See, I'm feeling stupid here, but posting the questions anyway.
Brugie, Priessel says you cannot spread the virus through seeds, only through plants.
Joydie, Almost all the brug seeds I have ordered have been brug seeds, but not properly named. The sanguineas are usually sanguineas but the arboreas are definitely not arboreas. If you order from native habitat, you will get crosses that should be named properly.
it's US regulations that prevent us from getting plants. Not theirs.
TiG, that's what I was trying to say!!! Thank you. Each country (and sometimes different sections of a country) has restrictions of what can be imported. Australia is very strict on any kind of plant, not many are allowed in. Hawaii is also very strict and has a long list of "pest" plants that they don't want. Some countries have "prefered" countries that plants can come from and other countries that nothing from them is allowed in.
Joydie, I'll share with you. No seeds but I have cuttings. They are dormant now but won't be long now and I'll haul them upstairs and they will start perking up again. I'll e-mail you separately. I think we're close enough for a Saturday drive. Annie
