I have a pod developing on becca lynn. i pollinated it with a 6 point frosty pink. my question, does each individual flower produce a different makeup of pollen? am i asking that right? does a 6 point mutant produce different pollen than say a 5 point on the same plant?
also, does the stigma only accept 1 piece of pollen or does it accept multiple ones..(possibly explaining why you get so many different ones out of the same cross). now, hypothetically, can you take pollen from 2 different brugs and get a viable seedpod on the mother?
man, its a long time til spring : (

Question about pollen
Hypothetically you can use pollen from 2 or more different daddies and get seeds from each. I may be wrong, but doesn't each grain of pollen go to one seed? Thus, hundreds of grains of pollen (which btw is microscopic in size) could be on the stigma. I would think that the mutant FP would have different pollen than a non-mutant one, but this is a question for Tonny or Eric or maybe John/Pardancanda.
Jen,
Been a long day? LOL I know what you are asking but I can't answer that for you. This is a question for Brugman or Cala.
yup, its been a long day, lol
You can quite easily pollinate both sides of the stigma with different pollen to be relatively sure each side of the resulting seed pod will have differrent daddy's so to speak. As for why some Brugmansia occassionally throw out seedpods with 3 chambers versus two, or 5,6,7,or even 4 points...I cant really say and I don't know if the polln on such a flower mutant is any differrent or not, but it does stand to reason that as there are mutant flowers, seedpods,etc...there could also be individual mutant gametes aka pollen. I do know some seedlings will come up completly devoid of chlorophyl and with 2,3, and even 4 cotyledons or seed leafs. I have had well over 500 seeds in a seed pod before, each seed resulting from a single individual pollen grain. I also find that hybrids between different species and their seeds are generally very fertile. Frost pink seedlings are generally very fertile no matter what they are crossed to, bur unfortunately often very white as well...
I repeatedly pollinate by brugs several days in a row and have some huge pods just starting to turn yellow. Wha hoo!! :0)
They are already ready to be picked if that is the case. One can let them ripen another day or two ussually before the seeds start spilling out onto the ground and the pod starts to rot. Most often though the pod rots and dries around the seedpod holding them in tight. Of course, those seed thus dried germinate most excellently.
uh huh, i think i understood that : )

Eric,
I have 2 of your Isabella seed crosses up and one seedling is completely white. Does this mean it is without chlorophyl and therefore an albino? The other question is can I grow this and then cross it with something else or will the lil sucker just go kaput on me from lack of chlorophyl? The other question is, "What did you cross this Isabella with so I can label it as to its parentage?" Thanks.

Eric, I am germinating some of your seeds (Isabella x several hybrids). Do you remember, who was the fathers of these crosses?
btw ... what is the significance of the number of seed leaves? I had many Datura`s with three or four, but now also one with three from the sanguinea "brown pod". Some of the three leaves Datura`s divided in three branches instead of the common Y.
wow!!! Jen is so smart, did you see all the blue words in her post????? can you tell my brain isn't working and that's all it could come up with?? LOL!!
Tonny I store pollen for up to a month or two in glass tubes(clean) in the door of the fridge.
Tonny,
If they were from my recent crosses I have only been using Butterfly and Rosabella pollen and simply using those hybrids as seed bearers. I don't have those hybrids anymore as I was just trying to disperse a bit of the aurea gene pool in some mixed hybrids. I may try to acquire Isabella again though one of these days. I only have aurea's, arborea's, flava's, candida's...and a few of Monika's, Gloria's, and a few of my own hybrids left. If you don't get anything you like though I think my Dr.Sues x Ecuador pink x Butterfly may prove worthwhile and I can send you some seed of course. Do you think the temperatures have warmed up enough so that I cand send your bag of seeds? I have just a few left and I want these to go out so someone can plant them. I don't really like the versicolors too much, but I am beginning to kick myself for getting rid of all of them. I think I should have kept the Ecuador pink. Well, as they say on to aurea's and arborea's and impossible crosses....
Brugman, i have EP and Isabella if you would like to trade.....JUST KIDDING! let me know, in a couple of weeks will have other babies for you, can include those too....
Arlene, I like Ecuador pink and Isabella and I am hard headed. I want to use an aurea...a pink aurea to create my double pink and hence that is what I will use until Monika tells me its impossible to do. Lol, I can just see me trying to create a pink double with Butterfly...as it is not pure and finding out it will never create a double pink after years of trying. That is the gift Monika is giving us-gifts of years of her hard work and dedication. To say she is amazing is a simple understatement.
