Plant Labels for Brugs

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Does anyone know where to buy the soft plastic ties they use to mark plants. They work like garbage bag ties, you put the skinny end through the slot on the wide end and pull through to tighten.Bought some Daylilies last year from a farm in Maine and he put one of these pink ties on all the plants for identification.I think they would be great to use on Brugs but can't find them in any of my garden catalogs. Poppysue, would you know? It's the same farm where you bought your daylilies.Wondering if he found them someplace in Maine since they aren't in any catalogs.

Snow,
Can't help you with those tags but you can take a small piece of plastic Mini blind about 2 inches put a hole in it and run some thin string through it....makes a great hanging tag and its water proof.

Some of you may have noticed my cut up Ziploc bag labels. Scissor the freezer bags- permanent markers - you don't have to worry about hard edges going through the mail. But then - I'm eccentric - I send cuttings in old sweat socks in cold weather.

My money are sometimes a little short and the plant labels (packed and sold as plant labels) are rather expensive here.

I just went to the book store and bought some of these colored plastic things used to put in between personal papers to sort them alphabetics (I don`t know the word for them *lol*)

These I cut up in the sizes I need and write on with a waterproff tuchpen.

I clipped a lot yesterday for sanguineas, whicj I will grow a lot of in an attemtp to find maybe one or two that can withstand heat and humidity.

I bought a paint pen in the crafts dept at wallyworld, under $3.00, as magic marker doesn't seem to last...think i read about this on a tig post. waiting to see if it lasts, had son do the miniblind thing....he broke then instead of cutting, said it was easier.

Arlene, You got a great deal on that pen!! They are 10 bucks at Office Max. I haave some brugs with Glory's tags and they are great tags. I've also received a brug from Liz wrapped in a sock!! It was very cold when it arrived and it was if fine condition. Not frozen at all. I would never thought of using a sock!! I think it was either Jen or Brugie that sent brugs with labels made out of thin strips of blinds.(it could have been Eric) and they were good too. I have Print Shop on my computer and can make labels using the Avery 30 sheet and even make each label different, these can be stuck on plain labels, but since it's ink-jet, you must seal them or they will fade as soon as they get wet.

I use miniblinds and was using the paint pen. Has lasted well, but I couldn't write small enough. I started using a pencil like Gloria does to get all my info on there. I've let one soak in water to see what would happen to the writing and nothing did:)

Snow they have them in the Gempler's catalog - Look under marking supplies. They're tree tags 1000/ per roll

Order their free catalog... I think they have more in it than on the web site.

Thanks everyone. You gave me lots of ideas here. Poppysue, yes that's what I'm looking for. Thank you. Last year I had bought the plastic markers that you put in the pots like you would a mini blind. DH has to do all the planting since I have a bad back. When he got done planting all the flowers and veggie plants only about half had the markers still there. Most were buried or he had stuck them in front of another plant. Not complaining though since the poor guy had to plant several hundred flowers. It was the first year for the GH and I'm afraid I planted way too much. With these tree tags I'll be sure to keep the Brugs properly named.

Poppysue
Great site...thanks for finding it for us.

I bought a PTouch label maker at Office Max for $20 a couple of months ago.
It makes really professional looking labels.

I put these on the galavnized plant markers and sprayed a coat of polyurthane on it to protect it.

So far half way through winter they still look great.

I'll keep you posted on how they hold up but I think there are going to be fine. I'll post a pix of them soon.

what kind of pencil do you use, Gloria? a lady i buy roses from uses the kind of tags you see everywhere, she said a plain pencil would last about a year, a sharpie not near as long. tig, they make fine line paint pens. that's what mine is, was really glad to find them in with the crafts. 2.89 or something like that.

I've got the fine line, may go back to them, I just like to try new things.

I saw some of the ties at Home Depot last weekend. They were in the hardware department and not in with garden supplies. I use them at work and didn't realize that you could but at retail store. I didn't think about using with plants but will go and get some soon. A good idea. Thanks Snow.
This would solve the problem of the grandkids swapping the labels around. I think they were in the electrical department at HD. That is what we use them for at work to tie up electrical lines to keep them out of the way of moving parts. They come in many sizes.

Arlene,
I just use a plain old #2 pencil...so far so good....been using the pencil for a few years now.

I can see where these labels would work great when pollinating. If you use different pollen on different branches of ONE plant, it would be easy to mark the branches correctly, in my case, in hopes of getting one seed pod. I think Home Depot is going to get a bunch of money out of me next time I'm there. Thanks for the info.

Brugie - for pollinating my daylilies last year I marked the flowers with those little cardboard price tags - the ones that come with a string attached. You can wrap the string around the base of the flower where the seed pod will form. They wouldn't hold up forever but they lasted the season until the pods were ready. Wal-mart has them in the stationary section - CHEAP ... like a $1.50 for a 100 or so.

Another good idea, Sue. Thanks.

Several daylily farms I have visited used those for pollination markers. I think it's a good idea. I write on the stem with a sharpie, but sometimes they fade, especially if the stem was wet when I marked it.

if you use a punch on the plastic mini blind tags (always looking for ones that people toss out) I use the garbage ties that come with the garbage bags and slip the tie through the hole in the mini blind marker tag. i then affix it gently to the plant or my grand daughter takes them out and plays with them too.

Over the years I have purchased a lot of those plastic plant markers with the pointed end to insert into the soil. I found that after using a Sharpie to write on them you can use nail polish remover to remove the ink and reuse them again. Of course I tossed a 1000 of them before I got smart. When marking six packs, etc. I cut the plastic tags in half to make them go farther. I've used the mini blinds too and they work great, especially for larger plants like brugs and tomatoes. Can write big and read standing up. They can be sized down too. A rotary cloth cutter works great for cutting any of them. It won't cut cloth very well later though. :-)

Woodstock, ON(Zone 6B)

I have used the mini blinds too. For writing I use a china marker. Its kind of like a crayon - has a little bit of a wax in it I think. So far so Good. Liz, I will use your idea with a sock. When I send cuttings I shred paper in the bottom of a pizza box family size. I then carefully lay the stalks in the box and add more shredded newspaper. The funniest is when people receive them and they write back to tell me that the pizza man arrived at their house.
