I have been reading up on this about how sweet it is and being adiabetic I think it might work good as a safer sugar subsitute for me. Thanks
wanted....Stevia seeds
I'm also a diabetic and have decided to give stevia a try also. I've been reading up on it tho, and from what I've read, it sounds like they're almost impossible to start from seeds, so I'm going to order plants instead. You might wanna chek into this too. Anyone out there know where I can find stevia plants at a reasonable price? Thanks! AuntyB
fINDIND THEM IS THE BIGGIE! I THINK SANDY MUSH HERB NURSERY HAS THEM.(PLANTS) I LIKE THIER CATALOGUE.iT'S LISTED HERE AT THE WATCHDOG.
Johnny's seeds has them. 25 seeds for $4.40. All I have read is that they are very easy to grow. Also the nursey here that I deal with says they will have them in late march or early april. this year they will have 75 different kinds of herbs. Copst $1.50 to $3.00 each depending on the herb. I'll let you all know the cost when they come out and if you want me to get you some I would be happy to do this and mail them to you for postage. I did this for someone here last year.
AB,purchased mine from Park Seed'
I haven't tried growing them yet. I was scared by many saying how difficult it was to start lavender from seed,I had no problem. Beginners'luck maybe' The Stevia has the same following and most everyone says get cuttings or better yet plants' Good luck whatever avenue you decide to take' Sis'
Hey folks...I ordered stevia seeds from Pinetree Seeds last yr...had no problem whatsoever germinating them. You can go to the Garden Watchdog and view info and get a link to their site.
Altho a pack of 10 seeds was $1.50 ALL seeds germinated (I bought 4 packs!). The plants grew to about 3 and a half to 4 feet tall and yes, the leaves are very sweet. I'd give them a try (and also encourage you to try Pinetree...they're a good company to deal with).
To me it is well worth getting seeds (very easy to grow)...from what I've seen the price of mail-order plants are quite high in price...if you can grow tomatoes you'll easily be able to grow stevia from seed.)
Horseshoe is right about pinetree, they are a good company to deal with. I like them and johnny's.
Thanks for the info
i bought stevia plant @ ebay last summer. last Oct. i tried to steep 5 dried leaves of stevia on 2 quart water. when it got cooler i tried it. like they said it is 300 times sweeter than sugar. if i didn't know any better, i thought i i had molasses on the teaspoon. stevia seeds are so small, it hard to see them. immediately after flowering i was looking for them and could not find any. does any one know?
MaVie, do you think I can grow it here?
Aimée... if i can grow it, i do not see why u can't. i do not know how it will react in the summer month thou, as i got it in early Fall. i have it growing underneath the tree to get shade, not direct to the sun. when the cold weather set in i brought the stevia in the house. the original plant succumb though, but new shoots are coming out. we will see what will happen. if they make it thru the winter, i will try to propagate one for u. not a promise but i will try ok.
back again! (was offline for about 3 days,no fun!)
I planted stevia out in my garden in full sun and also some up by the house where it only got mid-morning sun. Both locations did well. Here in Nc our summers get very warm and there was no noticable difference in the plants (concerning their location). I didn't bother to look for seeds tho, I just never saw any flowers.
By the way, if you get a plant going then you should just take cuttings. They are very easy to root in water then set in pots.
MaVie, what did I ever do to deserve such a good friend? You come through for me so often, I am overwhelmed. Thank you once again!
Aimée,
i am pretty sure if the situation is reverse u would do the same for me ;). i am Blessed & lucky to have a very wonderful caring son, whose been there for me after all the storms in his life has subsided. no need to thank me, it makes me very happy that i made a difference in someone's life, as others here in DG members has done for me during the trial i have been engulfed with. every one who knew me in person can tell u sharing has been the most important legacy my grandma pass on to me. it is not the material things or money that makes a person who they are. but the little things they do to make a difference. it is indeed my honor for u to consider me as a friend, U are the sister i never had!!! stay as sweet as U are Aimée =)!!!!
You can get a pk of 50 stevia seeds for 2 dollars or plants for 2.50 from twincreek farms. or you may be able to trade for them with our new member "twincreek".

Well, I got two plants in the mail last wk. Am going to plant them today. Funny ya'll should mention Twincreek. That is who sent me my plants. I took Mrs Twincreek to Florida for her first trip out of Texas almost 20 yrs ago & she is still there. tiG, did you get your seeds planted? How are they doing?
Aimée & tiG... i got my seeds and then some! lmk i can share some with u, unless u want seedlings. i will try to plant some. the plant i got is still trying to make it thru the winter.
smokette... u never respond to my emails!
MaVie, you have mail.
thank u very much Smokette! appreciate that truly.
The name is "Smockette". Just dropping that one little letter makes me sound so, so, different. I have been called "Smokette" several times. We get to typing & don't notice we missed a letter.
Hears a funny thing that happen to me fr dropping just one letter out of my name. My friends shipped me to adult Siamese cats fr the PI & in California, the airlines dropped the "n" out of Prince & made it Price. The airlines didn't have two cats for "Prince". I had to track the cats down by airway bill #. The airlines had sent them to a vet because no one claimed them (they were highly insured). By the time I located the cats, there were SIX. Seems the female was expecting & no one knew.
No prob, MaVie. You just keep reminding me of little things that happened in & around my PI life.
sorry about the missing letter. i was in such a rush, i did not have a chance to preview before i post.
i hope those reminders are good & happy ones! all my memories of the PI are happy ones, except during my visits friends & families who owns orchids & rare plants tried to give me plants that i wasn't able to bring here due to US regulations on plants. they could not ship it to me cause cost of shipping is pretty outrageous!
in my last visit, orchid nurseries were sprouting like mushrooms all over the place. did u see that happened before u came back to the US? some of their selections on palm trees were out of sight!
