German order from Kirchner refused enty

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Just a note to let everyone know the results of the order from Kirchners in Germany. I obtained the import license and Kirchner had the Photo., which I paid dearly for. RESULTS-- Plants were refused entry because the proper Post Entry quarantine paperwork was not included. Also, make sure you put DATURA as the entry plants because our government still does not recognize Brugmansia. I might add that when I sent for my import license listing Brugmansia as the plant I wanted to import nothing in the returned paperwork indicated that any other paperwork was required. As a result, I am out hundreds of dollars. As a kind gesture, Anne Kirchner sent a copy of their book with the plants, which usda is forwarding, it appears I purchased the book for several hundred dollars. Got to laugh--

I am in process of obtaining the proper post entry paperwork for spring.

The best news of all is that I am a new first time grandmother of an 8lb. 4 oz. young man named Luke. He was a Christmas Eve baby. Told my daughter that I couldn't wait until next Christmas to see if she can top that present!!!

Barbara

Barbara, why would your order be refused entry when people have rec'd orders from Hodniks with the phytos.

Congrats on becoming a grandma.

Brugcrazy,
I am still trying to figure that out. I have received plants from Hodnik in past prior to receiving an import license. Possibly looked at more closely because of the import license---I don't know.
Barbara

What a huge disappointment for you. Doesn't seem fair when you try and take all the proper steps.

Sorry to hear it, bward.

As you say, the problem may lie in use of Brugmansia instead of Datura.

I will tell you of my experience with Australia: I tried to send a gift of Pardancanda seeds to a friend there. Included some Belamcanda seeds as well (one of the parents of Pardancanda.) Well, the Pardancanda seeds were seized, and the Belamcanda sent on to the recipient.

This made no sense at all, until I learned that there is a list of what IS allowed in, not a list of what is NOT allowed in(to Australia).

So, Pardancanda being somewhat more obscure, was not on the okay list, Belamcanda was.

Congrats on the grandbaby, a wonderful christmas present for sure.

So, how much does the import license, phyto and postquarantine stuff cost? is it terribly prohibitive to order? i guess the paper work says you have to be in possession of the plants for two years before selling/trading?

did any of your seeds make it? We have a line formed to order from you, btw, i think i am at the head of the line (but i might be butting in)...

Arlene,
I had to leave before the seedpods dried--It snowed while I was in Miami and had temps in 20's. It was all my friend could do to keep the greenhouse warm----couldn't ask her to collect seeds. I could but she may not have remained a friend for long. She is not a plant person. Next year I will pollinate early and not have to wait for the bees to do my job. For some reason, the bees did not show up until August.
Import license is free unless importing in big way.Postquarantine stuff cost--since I did not have it--I don't know. Working on finding out info now.
Hope you had a good holiday.

Barbara, congratulations on your new grand baby. What a shame you lost so much money. What happens to the plants that were refused entry? Are they destroyed or sent back to the sender?

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

By the time the official contacted me, they were already dead.

would it make a difference is the plants were insured? just wondering...also Barb congratulations on the new baby I know you must be happy...sorry to hear about the money loss.
Joydie

Jodie,
that's a good question...anyone have an answer.

CC...what would UPS do in a case like that?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Not sure, there are 2 points,if it got to the quarrenteen alive a happy, then the APHIS group would be the ones to be acountable, which they would never admit!if the plants were held up in shipping because SUPPOSEDLY barbara didn't have the right paperwork(which it sounds like she did her homework, just sounds like someone is making thing difficult for brug people)then no insuance would cover it,they would not be held responsible for someones (the importers) missing paperwork. Now if it arrived in the USA ,DOA,then if there were insurance on them ,they should be covered. But it would have had to be reported that day .
