passiflora cuttings

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I was just wondering about passiflora cuttings. Seems like they rooted faster in November than they are now. I took cuttings, about 6 inches long of new growth, and they rooted in 2 or 3 weeks back in Nov. Am I just impatient now or do they take longer at different times of the year? I'm also bored, can you tell?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Calalily - the Vanderplank book says they root faster from the new growth in spring. I took cuttings in the fall and although they're rooted - they're just sitting there looking at me. Doing nothing, just sitting there.
I'm bored too - when is spring coming?????

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I lost most of the cuttings I took last fall. Just did some more and see one that isn't looking very good. Hope they make it. I don't want to have to start over again.

Brugie, I will share with you in the spring. I think we need a passiflora group to discuss these things like we do on the brug forum. I think I will ask how many passiflora growers there are.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yesterday I noticed that my passiflora cuttings had a couple of wilted leaves. I got the water and headed over to water them and low and behold, they weren't wilted, they were detached leaves and a lot of them. Now I'm thinking they might not make it. Bummer since I used most of my available cutting material. Will have to wait for more growth on the plants I have to take more cuttings. I wonder if this plant is maybe one that requires long light days to root? I'm grasping for possible answers here.

Brugie, you may have hit on something there!!! The cuttings I took in early fall rooted and the ones taken in winter didn't. They were both treated the same way (except the ones taken in winter didn't get tea-tree oil either) and both were new growth cuttings. I have a green house so they grow all the time. The coccinea and lavender lady have blooms. I will try some cuttings in a few weeks and see how they do.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Cala - didn't we used to have something like a passiflora group? Mine are making a run for my brugs in the GH. Some are still outside but the ones indoors are getting very pushy.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Liz, I think we did. I wish it would get started back up again. Maybe we need to holler at Tim. I think I will post on General Discussion and see if anyone is interested.

Chipley, FL(Zone 8a)

Could it be that maybe because they go naturally go dormant in the winter??? I tried some winter cuttings and they just went kaput. Oh, by the way I grow them too. Dee

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Well, isn't it true that most trees/vines/bushes go through a dormancy period? Everything slow down, especially growing new roots in the winter. Your success rates will drop, and rooting time increases during the winter. Rooting rates dropped to 25%-30% and took at least 10 weeks for me during winter 2000, for the same vines that normally rooted in about 6-8 week with 60-75% success.

I have a few 'Indigo Dreams' cuttings which I took early Dec., leaves are ok, but no root yet; they rooted in 3-4 weeks when I tried them in Sept.

Liz
We HAD a group, but there were a few incidents that occurred in the past, they all left except for a few of us.

I keep in touch with them via yahoo messenger or email. Let me know if anyone needs contact info.

Check out Myles site in UK, even though his climate is different, he offers info on growing, propagation, germination, etc.

Thanks Tim - I already have them. Still connected but it'd be nice to have one here. Seems to me it was in the vines and climbers forum that kind of got hijacked by Passiflora people.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I have been rooting them all fall and winter, they are trying to climb out the windows, get caught in the blinds when I pull them up, so they have been getting haircuts. Every Violacea Fm.#3, started, I now have about 5 or 6. Have Star of Clevedon, Coccinea, Vitifolia, Indigo Dreams, PurpleHaze, Incense, etc. The only one I am having trouble getting started is Alata-Ruby Glo, lost all but one cutting, now having to wait until mama plant sends out more shoots. Some are under lights, some at SW windows.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Better tell us how you are doing it. Mine are just wilting and dying.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

whoa, I see who I need to offer brugs for passifloras!!!!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Some start in mouthwash bottles, (or anything like that), of water(course we have the old well water!), plastic bag over, change water, every so often. Cut all bottom leaves and all the tendrils, leaving only couple small leaves at top.

Vitifolia, Violacea, Star of Clev. and your blue one, Shirley, all started this way. Others, try jar, water, waxed paper over top, then plastic bag. Coccinea and hard ones, in dirt(Miracle Gro, rootone.

Hope this helps!

Gloria)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

TiG, I see I'm going to have to find some tempting tropicals to offer her for those varieties!!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Tempt me Susie.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm assuming that you mean to cover the mouth of the jar with the waxed paper and stick the cutting through it? Then cover with plastic bag? I'm even resorting to trying some in water-sorb crystals or whatever they are called. Maybe I'm not leaving the lights on long enough too. Thanks Gloria (Ohio).

Shirley

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I can get all kinds of beautiful tropical hibiscus. I have diplandenia, cleradendron T., mandevilla, passiflora Purple Haze,p. Constance Elliot, p. Molissima, p. Lavender Lady, p. Morifolia(probably more rooted, I will have to check) I have several colors of abutilon but I think you already have the same ones. I have brugs, mostly common ones now, but will have more when they grow a little. I have pink cestrum, cestrum nocturnum,......anything so far??

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I have the night blooming jasmine, a pink and one other one?(Sambac)

Have peach, fuschia, and red geraniums. Fuschias red/white, red one(looks like honeysuckle) Bonstedt Gartmeister. One for Shirley, 4 more? Anybody.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

ooo ooo ooo!! You have mail.

Azusa, CA

I rooted some in water nd they are doing really well.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I have some rooting in water on my kitchen window sill, and would you believe they got buds on them, but they didnt bloom :(

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Pebble, the buds were there when you took the cuttings, you just didn't see them because they were very very tiny. My Lavender Lady and also Vitifolia red have been blooming, but if I take cuttings with buds, they don't mature.
Mine are now putting on all kinds of new growth and I've been taking cuttings like crazy. Most are starting to root in soil on a heat mat. I bumped the temp up to 72*F and that made a big difference.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

You guys have got my passiflora sap rising. I've been kind of swearing at them all winter because they keep reaching out to the brugs. Full on assault is more like it.
Can someone tell me? I have a couple of huge vitifolias - inside - I thought I read somewhere that there was no stopping them from going dormant in the winter. I can't find it in Vanderplank - These are the only ones dormant (hopefully dormant) Did I imagine this? OK - except for the incarnata outside.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Liz, all of my vitifolias are dormant except one is waking up and starting to bloom. Scratch the stem a little with your fingernail and if it's still green underneath the outer covering, it's still okay. Then spray a little nu-skin on the cut, lol. I plant my passifloras right in the big 20-25 gallon planters with the brugs. I couldn't keep the stakes/trellises standing in the pots, so I planted them in with other things. I did my mandevillas and pandoreas the same way, jasmine too. Those little tendrils on the passifloras aren't strong enough to do any damage to the large brugs. (make sure that the brug is bigger than the passion vine to start with)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Nu-skin? Like what you use,Calla, when you nose into your unripe pods? LOL! Can do ~~

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Liz
P. vitifolia skin will darken up, and the bark will get rough. It is hard to tell, but you will have to scratch the bark as Cala posted above. Mine did not go through a dormant period at all, and they are all outside, lost lots of upper tips due to frost.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I am in Ohio. I don't dare let my P. Fls. go dormant, inside, in pots. I did the first year, let them go dormant, never saw them again!!! I keep them shooting new runners, take cutting all winter. Some through January and now, are sitting still, not rooting, but tops are still growing, so expect roots any day now.

Hope this helps.

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Cala?? What kind you have passflora and what color are they?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

RR, I have lots of passifloras. Which ones are you interested in?

somebody put me down for a red, please?????? I know Tim, I lost it :(

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I have some red ones rooting, they seem to be the most difficult of all. I WILL have them for trade in the spring, but they cannot be shipped when it is cold. Many of the tropical varieties will die if they get below 45*F during shipment.
TiG, I have a red one for you and also one for Aimee. I have more rooting and will post when they are ready.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Mine have been in various places since January, water, perlite etc.

This past week, I have 2 Purple Haze
2 Star of Clevedon
2 Coccinea
all rooted, suddenly. They have had new top growth for a month, now finally they are rooting.
