To keep hawks out of our barn area the DEC said to use Mylar tape(ribbon),hang strips of it around the area,When the wind moves it ,the reflected light bothers some birds and they avoid the area.Don't know if it works on egrets and herons but its a easy and cheap thing to try.It works with the hawks. You can find some at this time of year,Its that shiney foil Christmas ribbon. In a pinch I've bought foil wrapping paper and cut it into strips. They said the red with silver back works the best.

Irish, I have had good luck keeping a local heron out of my pond with 2 large geese decoys setting near the pond. And one of our pond club members uses winddoxs, the movement in the wind scares the birds.
We have had our pond for 3 years and the herons do fly over but they never land.
Anything is worth a try. Good luck
