We have been talking about building a greenhouse that would be attatched to our house. It would be heated by opening 2 windows and using a fan to circulate warm air from the house through the greenhouse and back again. We live in a dry climate, but are wondering if the moisture would be a problem since the floor would not be sealed. Our climate is sunny, cold and windy in winter, hot and windy in summer. I know we would need vents near the top to get rid of excess heat, and fans to pull cooler air in from ground level. Does this sound feasable or crazy?
Considering attatched greenhouse
That is what I did in Memphis many moons ago. It worked fine. I used a space heater set to come on when it got excessively cold at night. I used lots of milk jugs filled with water to give off passive heat at night and also lined the ground with bricks to form a floor. The house wall/side was brick so it absorbed the daytime heat also. We only used it one winter as we moved and built a self standing one that next summer. I was thrilled with it though. It should work fine.
we're talking about redoing the back room and including a greenhouse wall on the east side. Haven't really done any planning yet, but from what I got from Stan, the east wall would be all glass with a bit of a glass overhang. I think. He really needs to draw me a picture. It would just be a part of the house, as I understand it. This might happen this year or it may be one of those that carries over until it gets done. I have learned patience...
Kathleen, after almost 49 years of marriage, I too have learned patience. I just may not live long enough to get some of the things I want completed. LOL!
ohhhhhhh Kathleen, you have my wheels spinning!!! We already have to replace the siding on our house. Plans are for spring, early summer. And we also want a greenhouse next year. Now, all I have to do is talk DH into redoing back one or maybe 2 bedrooms into green rooms. Glass panels instead of siding!! Could replace the greenhouse, I could enjoy my plants without the cold walk and late nights wondering about the heater, etc.
One bedroom wouldn't be enough though, so I will have to part ways with all my junk, and clear the junk out of the huge 'junk room' to make room for this. I can see it now, this are south/west exposures, corner of the house, oh my!! I won't settle for anything less now!! Already have lights, so that won't be a consideration, it's already heated, wow, I never ever thought of this, but I bet I get my way ;)
Hehehe, glad to be of assistance! I still don't know any more - not the week to ask, too many things going wrong in the barn. I'll keep you posted, let us know how your plans are going!
You go tiG!!!!!!......
Like I said before - Tig you need one of some kind more than anyone I know, just remember they are never big enough. So you'd better push for all you can get the first time around. I wish mine was 6 times as big, but I don't have the space you have. Good luck.
well, plan has been laid out and he knows I will have it!! Will only push for the back bedroom first, and then when he sees it needs to be bigger (next year) we'll just replace the siding on the next bedroom and it won't take much to do that. We're gonna put a small porch with a nice door on it. We bought two gorgeous doors when I was going to have my business here, so the door is already here. That's what got him, thinking about how nice that would look:)
We talked yesterday and it's to be the south wall, bumped out four feet. I'll lose the big hollyhock garden, but they can be moved. The lights will be incorporated, there will be two large windows. My table will be gone, but there will be two new counters to work on. But, the upstairs bathroom is first - he's just getting a little crazy with projects!
Kathleen, that sounds great, bonnie, hope yours works out too.Dh says, get some prices on those panels and he'll see what he can do for me.Our house sits with a direct solar south face. The only problem is ,thats the veiw of the lake.Hubby says That he will not let me put something up that will block that veiw.I could add one onto the garage, but not sure how to put a roof and sides on it.The overhang(soffit)seems too low to continue the slope, and then add sides, plus I would have to remove 3 large maples. Then we would get killed in the summer,no shade on the house. If I could put a clear glass one off the living room,it would work, but I think its out of my price range. So still looking for options....
