In my Jungle House, that is. I didn't have to go to Atlanta today and it was so nice I decided to do clean-up. I pruned off all extra leaves to keep down on the pests. I checked on my babies and found I have 11 seedlings up in the seeds from Busybee and 18 seedlings up in the seeds from TiG. I was so excited.
I didn't have any new blooms to pollinate and no ripe seed pods. I couldn't stand it, I picked 2 pods. One from JO and one from suav. white. I made a small slit in the side of the pod. The seeds are large, but still white and the little "bean" inside is very white. I photographed them and closed it back up as best I could. It satisfied my craving for seeds for a while (I kept going back and peeking into the pod and I don't think the white one will stay closed anymore)I will post pictures as soon as I figure out this new camera/software. I'm going to keep checking on them for a few days and maybe plant some. I will take pics of each step.
72 and sunny
the only place around here thats 72 is next to my woodstove,BUT ,the lake effect missed us again!!!!We were suppose to get 7" last night and another 7" today-all we got was a dusting!!!
Cala, I went out and turned up the little heater in my greenhouse, and now I am worried it will not keep the brug babies warm enough. Gloria's Ronbob said we'd have cold weather when I suggested we may not have a winter this year and he was sure right. Sure wish I had fixed the holes in the greenhouse. Thinking about stuffing them with something like newspapers or something.Have about three where the siding split from pure old age. Greenhouse is about 8 years old now so I guess we'll have to put new sides on it next spring. Keep warn and think about us playing in the snow.
Roz, I have 2 words for fixing holes....duct tape!! Stuff them with plastic bags, newspaper or whatever and duct tape it down. Do you have a heat mat? I set my babies on the heat mat and had to move my orchids down there too. I almost ruined my vanda orchids when the temp dropped to 42 inside the gh. It was 16 outside, so it could be worse!! Some of the brug (y'all got me saying brewg) leaves were stuck to the side of the gh. I cut them off and hope the tips are still fine. The JO's that had grown up to the roof were really badly damaged. They needed pruned anyway and I spent today cleaning them up. (yes, I swept up the mess too) I really enjoy this time of year when we're not rushed to do anything and I can "play" in the brugs. It won't be that way in about three weeks.
Cala,
Wish I had a Jungle House. I don't mean within our living quarters though. I already have that kind. Would love to be able to go out in the greenhouse, be warm, and enhale the smell of growing things. If we have an early spring, I'll turn the heat on in my greenhouse around the first of March. Boy, that is a long time away yet.
I love it.....Gloria's Ronbob. Roz,you aren't ever going to be able to live that one down. Jim came in from the garage a while ago and said that my Chs. G. that was dormant out there has 5 open blooms on it. That would be nearly dark 24 hours a day and still blooms. Old Charlie is a pretty good boy to do that kind of work and it is probably pretty darned cold out there too. If it weren't so cold out there, I'd go take a peek and get my brug fix for the winter. Heck, I'd take my F. Pink pollen out and see if it would still work, cold and dark or whatever.
Roz, the hail storm that hit here put about 20 holes in my greenhouse. We have the materials to replace the roof, but the carpenter hasn't showed up yet. Hope he gets in gear before spring and my planting season. I'm feeling like I need to be planting something right now, but I don't have an extra inch of space left in the house to do that.
Brugie, do go pollinate those blooms. It will become another obsession!!!
LOL!! Cala the brug pusher .... at it again!
Do you know how cold it is out there? Man, I don't know if I could handle it. I'd be working in a cold and basically dark garage. Will think about it for tomorrow morning though. I think our night temps will hit about zero again tonight. Brrrrrr!!!
Brugie your garage doesn't get too cold? I know they'd freeze solid in mine.
Brugie, there won't be a wind chill, and if you tape a flashlight to your head, you can see!! Pull on those big fuzzy hosue slippers and a warm coat and voila, you are ready to pollinate the brugs!! Just be careful and don't fall going down the steps.
Brugie, figure out how to get that tape off before you tape a flashlight on! Please bring Charles inside.....it will make us all happy!!!! five blooms! tough guy.
my brugs planted in the ground did fine with light frosts, but it was around 30 for a while not a long time... the flowers seemed to like it, was getting blooms on a lot of plants (sobbing).....
I'm going to go out tomorrow and check him out. Jim said they are all losing leaves, so I'm sure it got fairly cold out there or maybe the mites took a detour on their way into the house.
Poppysue, my extra garage is attached to Jims shop and he has a furnace in the shop. We don't have heat ducts into the garage, but enough oozes under the little door that in 14 years or so, we have never had anything freeze in there. I keep my potatoes and onions out there and they are on the floor. We have had temps down to 20 below zero and lower and still no freeze. I have all the brugs up on a banquet table against the shop side, so I think they will be okay. Heck, I have rooted cuttings if they don't make it anyway.
Brugie, I sure hope your brugs don't get too cold in your garage. They really should be okay, unless you have Arctic temps like below zero for several hours, don't you think? Ms Jen and I are so excited about the forcasted SNOW like idiots we must be. My grandchildren love the snow and the excitement is contagious. Even if your brugs get in trouble, could you cut off part of them and root them? Or will all be lost? Now I'm getting worried.........
Brugie, Sounds like your temperature is about the same as mine. It's 5 degrees out right now and tomorrow night and Thur. night it's suppose to be 5-10 below. Better put some thermal underwear on Charlie. LOL
Roz...the real cold weather will be here tomorrow night...suppossed to get into the low 20's tomorrow night and Thursday night.....better get the duct tape and fix the holes in the greenhouse. LOL It never got above 35º at my house today...gotta go and get more propane tomorrow. I still have a snow shovel from my days of living in cold places maybe I'd better see if I can find it. LOL
RonBob said hello Roz and keep warm.
Just went to the garage to check the brugs and it is about 40 degrees in there. However I did find a problem on two of them. I'm hoping this is because Jim has been giving them too much water. There are black areas growing on the green growth (stems) and it doesn't scrape off. It isn't raised or rough feeling, just is there. I isolated the two brugs that have that stuff. Does anyone know what this might be? I do have cuttings of all of them growing in the house, so to be safe, I will probably toss all of the mother plants that are in the garage. Will burn them and get rid of the soil to a place far away from anything I'm growing. Just curious as to what it might be. From what I've read this morning, there is nothing describing this kind of fungus/virus. Help!!
Shirley,
Do have the PREISSEL Brug book yet? Is the spots brownish necrotic spots?....could be tomato-spotted wilt virus. Can you take a picture and post it on Daves?
