Brush your dog's teeth

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I've just been educated this week that my dog needs to have her teeth brushed. DH's cousin is in Vet School at Auburn Univ. and came in for Christmas. He graduates in May.

Anyway he told me that this last semester he was assigned to brush the grayhound's teeth there at school. They keep several for blood doners and such.He was also supposed to go to workshops there in Alabama and speak on the benefits of brushing. At first he thought it was a bunch of bull, but the more he researched it,the more convinced he was that you needed to do it.

Brushing eliminates a great amount of bacteria in the mouth cavity. This will add years of healthy life to your pet.It nearly eliminates the start of kidney disease and heart disease. He said that it's the same as if you went 10 years and never brushed your teeth. It cuts down on 'doggie breath' too.

There is special doggie toothpaste that tastes like beef or chicken that you get.It does not foam and is designed to be swallowed, where 'people paste' is not.You use a child's toothbrush,or they make special dog ones.

It takes a little while to get your dog used to the idea, but he says the grayhounds actually enjoy it and line up to get it done. You only have to brush the outside parts next to the mouth opening,as dogs keep the insides of their teeth clean themselves. They just need help with the outsides.

I would have laughed anyone but this man out of my house, but believe me if Paul says to do something like this..you need to listen. He's the most no-nonsense person that I know.
