How do you pronounce "sanguinea" & "suaveolens"? Is it san -guinea(like the guinea pig or hen? )and suave-like the shampoo?I know it sounds stupid but I really want to know.Oh,the picture?just one so we have things to look at since most of us northerners have no blooms,I just need to remember..........
Pronunciation
San like sand guin like gwen and nea like knee ya.
Suav like the shampoo, e like the letter e o like the letter o and lens like the lens.
Got out my little botanical Latin book [YES ... poppysue has too many books!]. Sanguinea comes from sanguin'eus meaning bloody or blood red. I'm not positive but I believe it's pronounced san-GWIN-ee-ah. Maybe someone else knows for sure.
I think you have suaveolens right ... suave-olens - means sweet scented.
Thanks Eric,now I won't sound like an idiot!!!
Poppy Sue-and Vulcanicola? What does that mean? Yes, and could you tell us what aurea means as well? Thanks bunches in advance.

Au'reus = Golden yellow
Vulcan'icus = of or pertaining to Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metal working; growing on a volcano (Cool!!;-)
Here's one that made me laugh.
"Isabelli'nus = dirty yellow or tawny. The tawny color that Isbellinus implies comes from the spurious story that Archduchess Isabella did not change or wash her underwear for three years"....
I bet you'll remember that one!
Poppysue, sanguineous and pedunculated (from peduncle) are words i often type in medical reports.
here is a hard one (embarrassing self) how do you pronounced brugmansia.... i rhyme with rug....that is wrong, right? rhymes with brew...?
Yuck!!! Everytime I look at my Isabella now I'm going to think of dirty underwear.LOL
LOL snowhermit!! Isn't Isabella pink? I didn't mean to sour your image of her. Think of her rosy cheeks instead of her dirty underwear ;o) Arlene I don't have Brugmansia in the book. I wonder if it comes from another language. I pronounce it brewG-mans-ee-ah. Don't know if that's right though.....
well, that's how brugman pronounces it.... some of these words i have read and guessed... have some people around here calling them b rugs.... that will be a hard habit for me to break.
Arlene, I have been calling them Brugs also. Rugs like on the floor with a B in front of it. Don't think I can change and start calling them Brewgs as it just doesn't sound right after using the wrong pronounciation for so long.LOL
I pronounce lots of the Latin names wrong. It's hard to change even if you know it's not right. If you use them at all you're doing more than most gardeners in the US!
Here's some more lessons
insig'nis = remarkable; distinguished; marked
arbo'reus = tree-like
fla'vus = pure yellow
versi'color = variously colored
can'didus = pure white; shining
I thought versi = changing color
PoppySue-whats the name of that book your using. Sounds great. Could Brugmansia be a Greek word and not a Latin word or have your tried that already as well? On a side note, my Citronella is blooming. Citronella is rapidly becoming one of my favorite whites. Anyone else have Brugmansia blooming this time of year? I know someone has to have something beautiful blooming. I crossed the Citronella to the Culebra of course and the Butterfly hoping to get a Lamour type flower in their somewhere.
Does anyone know if Citronella has any color in its background? Time will surely tell, but it would be nice to know in advance.

Brugman,
I'm sure Cala has something blooming but she is on the road right now.
I have a Golden Lady with small buds and a Frosty Pink getting ready to bloom but that's about it for me.
I can't take it, it has to be b rugmansia!!! cause if it's brewgmansia, that would change Eric's name!!! around here, he's the b rugman.
I think I read someplace that it is pronounced
brug man zeea and I'm no expert, so I just go by what others say. I just know they are pretty and fun to raise as well as challenging at times.
Hope you all have a Great New Year!!
Shirley
tig, welcome back, you must be having fun with the baby...
shirley do you say broooo or brug? i rhyme with rug.....actually, i think it sounds a lot nicer that why.....
when i find my cd and get it installed i will see how they pronounce it....Just like brugman and poppysue, for sure.
have I been gone?? they near bout wore me out this last week. I've been reading, but could never come up with more than two words in a row, so I tried not to post!!! They all left to go to MIL yesterday and I've had 24 wonderful peaceful restful quiet hours. Trying to get my plants to look like they are well tended for when Cala gets here tomorrow:)
I pronounce it "brew" but like I said, I'm a follower. I'm going to go hunt for it. Wonder if the correct pronunciation would be in the new book?
S.
Okay, I just found it on the Brugmansia Information Menu. Copied and pasted this: BRUGMANSIA (brug-MAN-zee-a) That has to be b-rug. I'll probably always call it brewg though. Done it that way for over three years. I'll type it my way and you can read it yours. That would work for all of us. :-)

I always say brewg
I have fond it on that site before DG and always said it that way most people don't know and have to say angel trumpit
In my sierrahome garden encyclopedia it's brewg-MAN-zee-ah. Maybe it's just personal preference... like toe-mate-o & toe-mot-o...??? I can't find any info on the origin of the word though.
Eric my book is "Gardeners Latin a lexicon" by Bill Neal. It's a cute little book designed like an encyclopedia but it has lots of interesting bits of trivia. It's pretty basic.
Brugma ,I have Becca Lynn blooming and Jamaican Yellow,Chas G ,Frosty pink and Valley white with large buds.The VW is only about two feet tall and has 14 buds.
At my house, a VW is either a Beetle or a Karmann Ghia(*grin*) and that took me a minute to figure out! I just wish I had buds on ANYTHING!
that confused me for a sec....
I also read a Gardeners once latin lexicon in Danish. I don`t remember to have seen Brugmansia in it ... however ... I don`t know, if I pronounce the names alright, but I also would say brewg-MAN-zee-ah, if I takled in English *lol* Maybe its a matter of, what one prefer to call it. Brugs are fine with me : ) brewg-MAN is too *lol*
I often wondered and try to figure out, what the Dats and brugs names were supposed to sound ... ???
Here are some guesses (and forgive me my French ... oh, no ... Danish *lol* (joking):
ar-bo-REE-ah
SUU-veolens
AU-reah
CAN-dee-dah (there`s rythem there *lol*)
VER-see-color
san-gwee-NEE-ah
vul-CAH-nee-cola
High-breed-s
straw-MOO-nee-em
TA-teu-laa
EE-neer-mish
LAA-wesh
kwer-seeh-FOUL-eah
FEE-rox
MEE-del
da-TOO-rah
DES-color
e-nok-SEE-ah
MEEE-te-loo-ee-dez
WRIG-teh
prew-ee-NOO-sah
light-HAAR-deh
ce-RAAH-teu-kaw-laah (ke-RAAH etc ???)
I think I got to get that book *lol*
It's all Greek to me
I found in the Preissel book... in "1805 CH Persoon collates all the varieties [of datura] that grow into samll trees and live for several years into a seperate genus Brugmansia (named after Sebald Justin Brugmans, Professor of Natural History at the University of Leydon, 1763-1819)."
Eric ... any relation? ;o)
well, Cala says b rug, and that makes it okay for me to keep saying that. We have decided (okay, me...)that this maybe is a northern/southern thing. Seems the northerners say brewg and the southerners say brug. Eric lives in FL, that makes him fall in the northern category, and arlene wears overalls, that makes her southern :) there! mystery solved!!! LOL!!
tig, i thought it might be a north/south issue... i say b rug... they never put the funny thing on top of the U when they say how to pronounce it. eric must be a (drat) transplant.... (kidding). Eric, you weren't born in the south were you? of course you have been at it longer and know a lot more people in the business, i am sure you are write, it just sounds funny to me..brewgh wonder where the U of Leydon is... guess i'll look up something, poppysue, you sure do a lot of good research.
I couldn't figure out what you were all talking about. Then I realized that in my head I say b rug, but when I say it aloud it comes out brewg. Must be a canadian thing, eh?
I have sanguineas and more flower buds on my sang that has the big seed pod.
I too say B rug mansia....southerner here!!!!
Oh Oh!I say B rug and I'm definitely a Northerner. I hate to throw your North South theory out the window tiG. LOL
well, it was fun while it lasted!! LOL!! I knew I could count on you to say it right, snow!!! :) hehehe
LOL. Don't know if it's the right way or wrong way but I'm like a mule. Once something is stuck in my head there's no getting it out.It would take me months of practicing to say Brewg.
The few nurseries I've found that had brugs pronounced it b rugs. That's just the way I've always heard it, and why I pronounce it that way. It's probably like clem-a-tis and clem-at-is, host-ah and hos-ta, cam-pan-u-la and cam-pa-nu-la, psa-da-cor-us and psuda-cor-us and on and on and on
