Okay, all you breeders---is the brug we call 'Species' a true species? Is it the forefather of all the doubles we're seeing now? And more to the point, since I CANNOT get one to root, could I grow one from seed? I have killed several cuttings from this plant, and I want one SO bad, I even dreamed about it the other night! (That's where the 'grow one from seed' idea came from.)I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this.
Seed question re 'Species'
I asked the same question a while back.It apparently isn't a true species but rather a Logee intro that was named Species".Nothing like a company adding to the confusion with a name like that.
I will be taking a few cuttings from mine in early spring.If you don't find one sooner I will try to root one for you.
gone2seed,
When you are talking about 'Species' which one are you talking about. Just trying to get all this straight. You should see my notebook. Dee
Brugmansia candida "Species"
Brugmansia denotes the genus-candida denotes a species cross between versicolor and aurea. I have heard that many of the doubles were breed from the Candida species-but cuttings are very easy to root of this one as compared to knightii and some other doubles.
Brugmansia, don't say that!!! If you only knew how many of the 'Species' I've killed...Gone2Seed, please put me down for a couple of these, if you don't mind. (I've killed one rooted one, too, so if you can spare more than one...) Tell me what I can send you in exchange.(Plus I'll gladly pay postage.) I see you're looking for redbud---I could send you a passel of cuttings for that, or e-mail me and I'll send you my trade list.
i have a bunch of baby red buds too, i'm talking 6 inches and less.
Ms. Batt, some brugs are different to root... can't really do the water thing. i take cuttings, stick them in a pot with soil already wet and pat in. do my best not to water or look at them.... put them away from places i usually water, under oak trees. i water a little maybe every 2-3 days, also root in at least gallon buckets. also used a smaller clay pot before cause they seem not to hold water as much as plastic. i think too much water is what usually gets them. it's a lot like rooting roses.
i may hold the record for the # of brug cuttings killed!!!!
Dee.Think of it this way;
There are 5 or 6 species of Brugmansia depending on who is counting.
When you see a plant labeled "Species".It is just the name of a particular hybrid (white double) introduced by Logee's Nursery.Seems to me they could have named it George
or anything but "Species".
MsBatt,I will leave it up to you to remember this about March.I would try to remember but my brain is almost full.
gone2seed, I have made myself a note, since my brain is already too full also. Can you think of anything now that I might get started for you? Whenever you DO think of something, e-mail me and LMK, but remind me what we've talked about. I can offer you some seeds from a Frosty Pink, father unknown but probably an unnamed white, which will hopefully be ripe by March.
