Can anyone give me information on this variety? I would like to know about growth rate, flowering, light requirements, heat requirements, susceptibility to bugs, and propagation ease. Anything else you can think of would be great information for me also.
Thanks,
Shirley
Suaveolens Variegata questions...
Brugie, it was fun to find the links about the variegated suaveolens. I learned something about it today, besides from the picture, that so many people use to post on E-Bay.
I found this link. There is nothing much said, else that its hardy from zone 8 and higher:

A compact habit:

An evergreen large shrub (grows to 15 feet tall and 15 feet wide) that can be trained as a tree. It benefits from a hard cut back in the spring. Will take sun or shade, moderate water. Although it is hardy to about 20-25 degrees F., it usually will go semi-deciduous in the winter and have some down time then:

Tonny,
Thanks for the information. I guess it makes a big difference where one lives when reading the information from the different sites. I doubt very much that it would make it to 12-15 ft. in my state, but probably could do that in southern climates. I'm still interested in whether this plant will be attacked by the spider mites any worse than others. I find that in the house, the variegated foliage plants don't seem to have as much of a problem. However, outside, I have a big problem with bugs on them.
Again, thanks for doing my homework for me. :-)
Shirley
PS. How long does it usually take to send seeds from your house to the US? The datura seeds have never arrived yet. Not a big deal, just wondering.
I wonder too, because even if the postal office in Herlev and Sorø was overloaded in the weeks before X-mas, I did exspect the seeds would be there by now. I got two mails sayng, that their came through, but I send 12-14 letters, so I wonder, where the rest is right now ... I simply do this. If I get no further notifications on seed arrival within a week, I re-send the whole thing. I have the specific wishes of seeds and addies for re-sending.
Tonny,
You don't have to re-send if they don't get here. It isn't your fault if the Post Office messed up during the holidays or any other time. Maybe a little more time and they will arrive. I'll sure let you know if they get here.
Brugie - I have both the Variegata and Peaches and Cream growing in pots during the summer and are cut back for winter and mostly dormant. Peaches and Cream blooms are pendant and peachy to cream - heavy bloomer and very robust tree. The variegata is quite a bit smaller, the blooms are nodding and a creamy white. I love both of them. P+C is much easier to root from cuttings for me. I haven't had any problems with bugs indoors but then I strip off every leaf when they come in and keep them off even when they are adjusting to being back outside in March.
Thanks Liz,
I was wondering about the bug problem and can see that caring for them would be a lot easier if I were to strip the leaves. I know that after they adjust in the summer, they will quickly put out new leaves, but I'd bet it will be a funny looking stick for a few days. I haven't heard of anyone other than you mention that they have this variety of brug. I think is is very pretty and am looking forward to trying to hybridize with it. Wouldn't a pink or rose bloom look great on that variegated foliage?
Thanks again!!
A pink or orange with the varigated foliage would be very nice. How about HG x Variegata?
Tonny....don't worry about re-sending the dat seeds to me...not your fault the mail and customs mess us up:)
Owen
Well - someone please remind me in the spring because I should have lots of cuttings. My variegata has a lot of stems because it was the grower's stock plant. Seems to want to be a big bush rather than a tree.
Shirley.....that President tomato sounds a lot like Jet Star to me.
Liz.....would you happen to have President tomato seeds?
Owen
Jet star comes down with a little pointy thing on the bottom and the President doesn't.
Now, about the brugs.....yes Owen, wouldn't it be fun to have some variegated foliage on the crosses you mentioned. I'm hoping to try some things this summer, even if I have to keep the whole plant in the family room waiting for seed pods to mature. Gosh, another Christmas without a tree. May just have to put lights on a brug.
Brugie, I have a friend who puts lights on a Pencil Plant (tree-sized) and I'm sure a brug would be MUCH nicer!
Owen - sorry, no tomatos here. It's a struggle to grow tomatos in Vancouver, they have a tendency to get early blight.
How about a variegated double pink? Is there one of those yet?
Would love to see any color (new) on a variegated brug. Sounds like I'm getting bored with the plain colors and foliage, but NEVER. Just love any brug I can get my hands on.
A double hot pink variegated would be fantastic:)
Think it might be a while before someone comes up with hot pink. I'd vote for royal blue too. Seriously though, I like the look of the variegated foliage and some colorful blooms would really set it off. Let's work on that Owen, okay?
Liz, I don't know of a variegated double pink, but that would sure be pretty. Might have to work with the double pink group down the road.
I'd even like to see the variegated grafted with a dark pink!
CC, that is what I was thinking of doing. I'm supposed to have Betterfly and L'Amour coming in the spring and either would work well, I'd think. Do you ever feel like your head is spinning with all the things you would like to do with the brugs? I'm going to have a ball when the weather warms. Someday I'll have a glass room added on to this house so I can play with the brugs during the winter as well.
S.
I was thinking of my Butterfly with Maya, but I want to wait till they get bigger, take cuttings, and then do it.I figure that way if I screw up with the grafting,I'll still have my original plants.I do think that would be awesome!
CC, do you or anyone else that reads this know where I can buy a Pink Beauty brug? Would sure like to have one. I haven't seen them on any of the sites I visit or if they are there, they don't have a picture. Owen just sent me a pic. and it is really pretty. LMK.
S.
you have e-mail
Thanks guys!! Back to hunting.......
I cannot wait until I learn half as much as all of you know about brugs. I just fell in love with them this year and am learning so much. Thanks to all of you. and a happy healthy new year to all my new friends!
