Plumeria Surprise....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Hi,
Just wanted to write and say that Iowa isn't all bad after all. I was checking all my plants for spider mites and found that my pink plumeria log that I planted this fall has a bloom cluster coming out of the very end of the log. I've never raised this plant before and thought it took up to 18 months before a cutting would bloom. I am delighted. This is a pink one and I can't wait to see and smell the blooms.

You will be delighted! And the nicest thing is that once they bloom, they fork, so next year you'll have even more blooms. (They simply do not fork unless they bloom or you cut them.)

Didn't know there was a pink one - and what's this "log" thing?? I have the bright blue ground cover type - wanna trade some seeds??

You're thinking of plumbago, Azalea. Plumeria is also called frangipani, and its flowers are used to make Hawaiian leis.VERY different plant!

Lol,LOL - yes I know!!! Note the time I posted that!!! I have a white Plumaria, used to have a red & pink but lost them. I put mine in the ground all summer, then cut it up and root it in pots for winter. Never had a bloom this time of year tho. Soooo wanna trade a piece of your log???

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Azalea,

Let me grow them next summer and when I get ready to put them away for the winter, I'll try to remember to post. Otherwise, you send me mail at that time. I have quite a few of them right now, but want to be sure I have one of each color growing. If all goes well I'll have white, red, pink, yellow, and rainbow.

Thanks Brugie - I'll try to remember too - the rainbow sounds neat. I wonder if they could be grafted???? Just had an idea - could make notes on the Calendar for later trades.

Geez, who can remember to look at the calendar? However, I do have a calendar program on my computer that pops up with whatever I happen to be reminded of, so I'm going there right now and put something in to remind me to post or write to you. Thanks for the idea!!

Okay, just put you down for a Sept. 1 reminder.

Hi Brugie,
I have the pink and yellow also. I would like to have the white, red and rainbow. Check the site: Plumeria 101 They have photos of the different colors.

Aren't they pretty. I'd love to have every one of them, but then we would have to move out for sure.

That's what I would like try and grow, a Plumeria! In my glasshouse this morn I brought the Dendrobium orchids down to the table below and low and behold!!!!!!!!! oodles of flower stems in place..it is exciting! R.Rose

Brugie, how nice that you are going to have blooms. I tried the plumerias but managed to kill them.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

That may happen here yet, but I'm holding my tongue right that I'll at least get to see one of them bloom. I did have mites on one of them but a good wash and spray seems to have cured that problem for a while. I get a little tired of walking around the house each day just to inspect the plants for bugs, but it has saved me a lot of plants. Those mites can appear out of nowhere and I don't like to let them get ahead of me. Have had just a couple of the brugs with them this winter, so I've been lucky, so far.
