These ants were on a log. Many of them. Not sure if the photos show enough to identify. Southwest Washington.
Ant identification
Look at an ant in profile. If the thorax appears fairly smoothly convex, it likely is a carpenter ant (Camponotus sp.). If you can see a distinct depression about midway, it likely is a thatch ant (Formica sp.).
