CLOSED: Is this an Helophilus fasciatus hover fly?
Could very well be, but there are a few other species with a similar appearance. Do you have a color image of it? Helophilus fasciatus is known as the narrow-headed marsh fly.
After looking at this image, I believe that it most likely is Helophilus fasciatus. Bear in mind, however, that some specimens of H. latifrons can have a very similar appearance.
Thanks for your additional thoughts. I did a little research on both for comparison and can see it's a tough call visually between the two.
