Did anybody notice that the plants that need to be quarantined are on a list of "restricted" plants. Our inspector says brugs are NOT restricted plants, so there is no need to quarantine them. They would be treated just like thousands of other plants that are imported into the USA every day. All sorts of perennials and bulbs are imported without having to be kept for 24 months. This restriction isn't for every plant, just a few restricted ones, especially wild collected plants like orchids from Costa Rica (illegal to have). I agree that if the brugs were "wild" collected they should be restricted.
He went on to say that it is illegal to import ornamental sweet potatoes into N.C. because of root weevils that could destroy their sweet potato crop. Strawberry plants brought into Tennessee are supposed to be quarantined. Fruit trees are not allowed into California and Arizona from Hawaii. In fact, there are lots of plants that are not allowed into Arizona and California.
He said when plants come into the US, they must be accompanied by a phyto certificate and go thru a quarantine station where they are inspected and sent on their way. If everything had to be held for 24 months, we couldn't get bulbs from Holland or seed from Thompson and Morgan. Most of the New Guinea impatiens, cultured geraniums, fuchsias, double impatiens, poinsettias and lots of the PW hanging basket material is grown in Costa Rica, Columbia and a few other So. American countries and shipped to the US. Danzinger is in Israel and they ship plants to the US on a regular basis. You can get a list of restricted plants from the US Dept. of Agriculture.
I hate it when someone tries to use scare tactics to force people to do something their way. I think it is driven by greed and jealousy. Greed because they want all the plants to themselves and greed because they want you to HAVE TO buy them from her. Reminds me of a bully in the school yard!! I know when someone tries to force me to do something, I get very stubborn. I will never buy one plant from that nursery.
talked to plant inspector
What nursery is it?
thanks cala...
Diane, you have mail. Cala, thank you so much for the clear information. When are you going to put your nursery on line, so that we can buy from you?
Thanks Calalily for let everyone to know and understand clear imformation!
Thanks for the information. Saying our brugs are not on the restricted list is the key to the whole thing!

This was GOOD news, finally. Thanks so much for taking the time to find out and post it for the rest of us. I'm like tiG--when are you going to get a site back up for us to buy from? Would rather buy from you than anyone.
S.
Thanks Cala, I think you just cleared up a lot of confusion with this reliable information. :)

Calalily,
Oops! Your inspector should have looked up Datura in his CFR manual. Brugs are considered to be in the same catagory of restricted plants as Datura. CFR manuals are currently being updated to list Brugmansia separately from Datura.
Email Pam Waterworth, the US Post Entry Coordinator, and let her explain to you that you are breaking the law, and let her explain to you just how serious this issue is. Let her tell you the about the groups out there who's job it is to investigate reports of restricted plants that enter this country with no post entry quarantines. Let her tell give some hard, cold facts.

Cala, I thank you for looking into the shipping policy. I had my difficulties figuring out how I was to reward the kindness of so many people in our brug forum and consider also re-install my company`s US pricelist with a newly added tag called "Physiosanitary Certificate". and start to export Brugs in the autumn 2002 or spring 2003.
I note from the message above, that Brugs ARE on the "quarantain-list. I have once more mailed Mr. Gutierrez in the EU on this special issue.

Vicki, get a life and leave us alone. If they are accompanied with a phyto, they are legal. Besides, it's the USDA and not the postal service which has control over this.
Shouldn't they be investigating illigal plants,if they are wasting our tax dollars harrasing us about house plants I think something should be done.they should be out there looking for bootleggers growing their own hops and wacky tabacy. Are my hard earned taxes paying for this???
APHIS is more concerned with invasive plant species and plant pests. Namely mites, whitefly, Japanese beetles, nematodes and arthropods. They are concerned with species that once introduced into the US will take over native species and damage wetlands like the taros in Florida and the loosestrife in the midwest. They are worried about valuable commercial crops being damaged. Seems like the only one worried about a few brugs coming into the US is her.
Thanks Calalily!
I have a question for Vicki. Did you join us here to be a friend and fellow gardener or to police over this forum with threats that we are breaking the law and the serious consequenses that are awaiting us.Here's some cold hard facts for you. This was and still is a forum made up of friends that share the same interest and enjoy the happiness that it brings to share and to talk about their plants. This will not change even with you trying to wreak havoc here.
I find your posts to be more in a threatening manner than a helpful one.If we are stupid enough to do something illegal then we are responsible for our own actions. We don't need someone to come and accuse and threaten us on a forum that used to be fun and stress free.
Well said SnowHermit. I totally agree with you. I'm sorry if I caused anyone stress,I just hate to see a bully trying to intimidate everyone.
Cala, You aren't the one that's causing stress. :)
Yes Tonny, it will be great.
I've said this before, but probably in emails---I'm ready to get back to the fun we used to have. I think we all have enough to worry about and certainly, I for one, am not going to get rid of my brugs unless they get a virus. I just found out today that one who smokes should not be touching brugs without washing hands. Am I a little slow in learning here? I knew that with tomatoes. Duh!! :-)
There is a good post on Yahoo from Tom Dempsey, Farm Mgr. at Rainblow Heights Nursery. I think if we had been directed to this information in the beginning, it would have been easier on all of our hearts. It certainly is not threatening in its content and explains a lot for me.
I already messed up. The letter is from him, but Vicki posted it.

Brugie, Why if you smoke should'nt you touch Brugs? I hope I haven't been doing something wrong as I smoke.
Cala can tell you the name of the virus nicotine causes. Where are you Cala. Something like tobacco mosaic or something like that. Can't spell either, but you get the idea. I'm just upset right now that a gardener sent me what was supposed to be a virus and I had to delete something. I did it all and then found out that what I deleted was something I might need. Wasn't one of us from here though. She deleted hers too. I don't know who sent it to her. I'll be back when I get my computer back in one piece.
S.
In other words - those of you who get mail from the Yahoo group- don't open anything from Nancy - delete it.
Delete, delete, delete !!! NOW!!
It was a hoax......now that I deleted that file. I did, however, learn how to get the exe. back. See, I'm never too old to learn. I sure hope I didn't get any of you into trouble with your computers. Okay now.......back to brugin'.......
Brugie, Sure glad you got your computer back in order.
Brugie
Tobacco is supposed to spread Tobacco Mosaic virus. All you have to do is wash your hands before handling your plants. Also they say you shouldn't smoke in your green house. On the other hand, it's been many years since the USDA has had a reported case of Tobacco Mosaic in tobacco. You would notice it if you had it, it makes the leaves mottled and sometimes deformed. It is also possible to spread to Mandevilla, tomatoes, peppers...lots of things. I would worry more about the INSV or TSWV, since there are more host plants and also insect vectors for these viruses. Just remember to wash your hands and also any tools like clippers, shovels, etc. that you use with other plants. Keep an eye out for insects like thrips, aphids and leaf hoppers and you should be fine.
Thanks Cala,
I have never had any trouble before, but usually buy or raise tomatoes that are supposed to be resistant. I've never had any trouble with any of my brugs either. Maybe by this summer, I won't have to worry about the tobacco. Told my hubby that with his help, I'd try to quit after the first of the year. Just an added comment.....I know people who use cigarette butts to make a tea to spray their stuff with using it as an insecticide instead of commercial stuff. They use it on their tomatoes too.
Interesting. I remember my grandfather dusting some flowers with Mail Pouch tobacco company floor scrapings. That was in the 1950's.
For tomato plants, I would use very weak manure tea....supposed to help keep down diseases and feed the plants at the same time:)
I just use tequila to keep my old hide nice:)
