Hi,
This asparagus fern was given to me 18 years ago. It was beautiful and Sadly neglected the past couple of years. It is seriously root bound and slipping fast.
I’d love suggestions for how to proceed!
Many thanks!
Asparagus Fern Help
I have not grown these in years. Where I grew up birds dropped berries which would self sow becoming invasive in hedges and planters. When grown in pots or baskets they are best tackled with a pruning saw or long serrated knife. First cut off dead growth. Now cut greenery down by 1/3 to 1/2. Then saw 1/3 off of the bottom. Soak remaining roots in water or get professional and soak in half strength fertilizer. Remove any dead roots and loosen root ball by hand. Depending on what is left you can either pot as two plants or place the two greenest sides facing each other and in the center. This will give them space to expand outward. Use a loose mix containing perlite and/or a bit of sharp sand.
Edited to add what I was thinking of is Asparagus aethiopicus, also called asparagus fern but I would manage this one the same way.

Hello! Asparagus ferns are hardy plants that can live for many years with proper care. It's great that you want to revive your neglected asparagus fern! Here are some suggestions on what you can do to help your plant:
Repot your plant: Since your asparagus fern is root-bound, it's time to repot it. Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one. Use a high-quality potting mix that drains well. Gently remove your plant from the old pot and loosen the roots. Then, place it in the new pot and fill in the gaps with the potting mix.
Water your plant: Water your plant well after repotting it, and make sure to keep the soil moist. Water your asparagus fern regularly, but don't overwater it as this can cause root rot. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.
Provide proper lighting: Asparagus ferns prefer bright, indirect light. Keep your plant near a window that receives filtered sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.
Prune your plant: If your asparagus fern is overgrown, you can prune it to help it regain its shape. Use sharp, clean pruning shears to remove any dead or yellowing leaves. You can also prune back any leggy stems to encourage new growth.
Fertilize your plant: Asparagus ferns benefit from regular fertilization. Use a balanced fertilizer every two to four weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
With proper care, your asparagus fern should begin to thrive again. Good luck!
