I have about 5 of these growing in my garden in northern Mojave, CA. they appear to be evergreen (survived the winter). reddish brown stems, compound smooth leaves.

thank you. that is a good suggestion and reminds me that it also looks a bit like smooth sumac. but i think the leaves are too small and the form is more upright than both of these - tree of heaven and sumac branches seem to fan out like a tropical palm or a locust.
hope someone can ID this for me!! thank so much.
