This shows the stigma and anthers of a Frosty Pink that is just starting to open. You can see the stigma is hanging down below the anthers. I start pollinating as soon as I can pry open the corolla, and repeat a couple more times.
Inside Frosty Pink
i had noticed sometimes the stigma is hidden and sometimes not, i had thought maybe it was the type of plant, didn't know they went back and forth.
I've noticed it more on JO than any other variety. I wonder if the ones where the stigma is hidden are "defective" and not receptive at all? I will have to take notes. I have to admit, I'm new to all this and Eric probably knows much more than I do.
i watched eric tear open culebra, break off the antlers to get to the stigma. i haven't had luck pollinating that i know, #1 i wasn't keeping good track of what i pollinated, and then #2 the moths and/or something went nuts. i am practicing up now. susie, if you want some culebra pollen please tell me, i'll make myself mail it tomorrow. you are much better at this than me. do you have equador pink in bloom?
I would LOVE some culebra pollen. No EP in bloom yet. I had cut most of them back right before the group decided to do the double pink quest. I need to check tomorrow and see if there are any tiny buds coming on. I can sure send you some as soon as one opens.
You can tear most brugmansia open from the calyx. Simply shine a flashlight through the back of the calyx and when the corolla is almost touching the end of the calyx you can tear it open to pollinate it. There are some exceptions like HG. Hg is not ready to recieve pollen even when she is poking out of the calyx several inches.
susie, i have EP in bloom, ripped her open to put culebra pollen on her today. just thought that would be a nice mix of what i know you have.
So, i should get a flower just opening, cut off the antlers, wrap in coffee filters, and mail? (you haven't said anyting, i have been trying to drive you crazy calling them antlers!)
Arlene, I saw that but wasn't sure if it was accidental or intentional. :) Yes, I sent brugcrazy some pollen from FP today and I just pulled the anthers off, put in a baggie and wrapped in cushiony stuff and sent it Air Mail. I pulled anthers from 3 different blooms.
will it go mushy in plastic? too bad the DH doesn't still go to tennessee. he did a trade for me once, the trader and her hubby went to his hotel and did the trade.... course, he won't do it anymore, says it is illegal to be hauling plants in the big trucks. (he doesn't want to bother is the main reason!)
Uh Oh, did I send it wrong? I hope it's still good. It was going to Canada, so maybe it will stay cold.
i don't know, cala, maybe fine, just don't know.
I just keep learning more and more from this site. Keep it up you experienced Brug growers. :)
I just keep laughing at some of the posts like Arlene's with the antlers. I wondered when someone would say something, but you know Arlene, you have your own brug talk so I just assumed it was some of your language. I get such a kick out of you guys. Where is Owen? I bet he would jump in with some cute remarks. Keep up the great work and I hope the pollen makes it to its destination okay.
Brugie....I'm here:) Just reading....all cuted out for the day:) But rest assured, I am trying to keep up with all the information in the forum.
I saw the name of this thread and figured I just had to see what this was all about!! haha

tis the season for antlers, ms brugie. you don't need a super nova, you have...one of yours from seed looks a lot like that doesn't it???
Arlene,
Beats me. I've never seen a picture of super nova. Just noticed that the NH catalog said: Potentially the largest brugmansia flower, these blooms are 30cm+long and almost as broad." That sounds like one heck of a wide bloom to me.
