culebra report

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

First, if i can find any pollen i will be happy to share it, will need explicit instructions. was looking for some on a fresh bloom tonight, did not see any.

CC, will take pics tomorrow of those funny looking thingies.

Brugman, looks like one pod has taken, guess a little more time will tell.

two moree look like they are going to have two points on the pod, shaped like a tooth kind of. there are 2 stigma stalks each going to the probable bud, intact, separated by a little space. will take a pic tomorrow GLW.

Also, one of the brugman white versi hybrids i pollinated with EP and XV peachy lite apparently has made 3 pods.....i think the one that never recurved, will have to look to make sure.

Hope they make it Arlene. That will be so cool if you get culebra seeds! I can only imagine what its babies will look like. Brugman have you got seeds from it before? I wonder if the narrow foliage would be passed on to its offspring.... or the funky flowers for that matter.

Arlene,
I pollinated my Culebra here with a bit of plain jane wild white aurea as well. Heres hoping. Plan on crossing Culebra to yellow aurea and a few others as well. One seed pod is all thats needed. Also, for those interested, you can pollinate Culebra before she opens and when she just opens. You can pollinate Candida species while she is green or just barely poking out up to when she is almost ready to fall off. Try to pollinate HG when she is green and poking out a few inches though and its a waste of time. With HG you need to wait much longer. Seems HG takes much longer to develop her pistal and her inner skirts than many other hybrids. Here's hoping your Culebra seed pod develops fully. My main interest in crossing aurea's to Culebra is too try to see exactly how many aurea's I get and how many Candida types I get and how many mutations as well.

Arlene, Glad to hear you are having success with that Culebra. To see it up close was awesome and I would love to see some of those pics.

Hi, Annie, hoping maybe some success.

12/17---- hope i did right, i could never have done this if i hadn't seen brugman do it, let me know brugman.

i found some pollen on culebra, ripped off the anthers and pollinated these by tearing their calyces.... made extremely hard because 2 of these are brugman's hybrids and their FIRST blooms..... ecquador pink and 2 X brugman unknowns.... one versi and one not....

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

two pods have fallen off, 2 to go....will see if they make it......

oh.....:(

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

tig, how is your culebra doing???

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

wonderful!!! very green, it lost most of the leaves it had, but has put out all new ones:) thank you again!!!

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i am glad. she should be ready to bloom for you when the weather starts warming. let me know about HG. the seeds i sent you were fresh picked, opened the pod and poured in the brown bag, i want to say off brugmans XVPeachy. if you have old email i might have said, i looked in mine but don't go back that far. i have to delete mine or the program deletes them for me, the latest ones i need.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

that's what they were, you wrote it out. Good on HG for now, if I can keep it keeping on:)

Culebra pollen, one can get pollen from skimpy Culebra anthers by simply pressing the anthers open with ones finger nail. You can do this very same trick with Hemerocallis if you want to get a few hours head start....If one squeezes as one goes along this will release any pollen that may be present and one will often get enough pollen to fertilize a few flowers from a single Culebra anther. Albeit, one must still get the anther at th right moment, one may find that the anther has only partially opened revealing just a few grains of pollen. This happens with Candida species as well...So, who is going to cross Culebra to Shredded white?

if anyone has shredded white in bloom i'll send them some culebra antlers.... cold wave coming, brugman, supposed to be 43 here tomorrow night.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Shredded white x Culebra is definitely one in my plans. But which would be the best momma?

FSH, TX

I think either way it would be an interesting cross. I try to make crosses both ways when possible though. For instance my Culebra x white aurea...I have white aurea x Culebra going as well.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

dang it, brugman! you are making me jealous. wishing the best of luck for you, hoping to trade for some cuttings of some of these beauties... hopefully i will find something to trade, how about a go cart?

FSH, TX

Arlene,
I am making myself jealous if the truth be known. Just picked some DR.Sues x Pink Aurea seeds today. I don't know where to begin, but I know that I am going to focus on pink and yellow aurea types in the future. I am slowly eliminating anything that is not at least 50% aurea from my Garden. Its very hard as some of them are very good hybrids, but I am working towards very specific type crosses. I am only keeping doubles, aurea types, and a very few of my own hybrids as far as the suaveolens, versicolor gene pool is concerned. As for the arborea, flava, Vulcanicola gene pool...I am momentarily maxed out on those types I wish to grow as well. I did say this is a slow process though...? I sure do hate pulling trees out of the ground....

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Brugman, i will find good homes for those!!!! email me, let's talk trade.... i don't have plants you want, i don't think... a couple of small rooted roses..., futures on my double peach and creamsickle from native habitat, and the international trading tool.....it's green too. please email me, will bring a truck!
