My BRUGS

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

Here's the brugs that I got cutting from some of you during summer time. And I would like to ask you why three of those brugs have light color leaves than all of brugs. One is Salmon and other is unknown that I got it from tiG. Would you please tell me why? They are part Sun and Full SUN.. And what chemical should I spray on them to kill the caterpillars that have been eating some of leaves. Should I use one gallon of water, few drop of dishes washing liquids, what else???? And I am still looking for brugs called BUTTERFLY, ECUADOR PINK, INSIGNIS PINK, PEACH/CREAM... cutting or seeds. Email me or post it.. THanks..

Mini, without seeing them in person I can give you my best guess. Most likely it is an iron defeciency, giving them a little miracle grow or chelated iron should solve the problem. Follow the directions on the package, don't overdo it. It could also be the variety or the weather. Some of mine lighten up in fall/winter.
For caterpillars, use Dipel or Bt spray. It's harmless to humans and animals but works wonders against caterpillars. For aphids and other soft bodied insects half and half water and alcohol mixture with a squirt of dish detergent is good. I've been using something called Permagard that is pyrethrum and silicon dioxide(finely ground diatomaceous earth) combined.

if you havn't seen the caterpillars they may also be slugs
I thought I had caterpillars because of the way the leaves were eaten. it turned out to be slugs check under the pots if they are on the ground like it looks to me,like you may find some..Maybe

Irish, you're so good!! I can't believe I forgot to mention that. I've had slugs and snails crawl up the stems on my 6 ft plants and eat on the leaves and blooms. I just sprinkle a little DE on them and try to keep it around the pots. I've moved pots before and found a dozen or more of the slimey things under them. uuuugghh, hate those things.

When I brought mine in for the winter,I had sprayed them, but after a few weeks the leaves were being eaten-badly.I keep looking around, trying to figure out what was getting them. Then one day I was in the house and I heard munching,it was coming from the brugs. There were catapillars, the exact same color as the brug leaves, long and skinny.I sprayed with insectacidal soap, haven't seen a cat since then.Felt bad, dont know what moth or butterfly I killed off.

CC, when I brought mine in, I saw those too. I've let a couple make cocoons, we will see.(If it's a beauty, I won't tell)

OOOHHHH ,I want to know any way.If it happens again I'll know if I should relocate them

If they are the same long, green caterpillars that eat mine they are just plain old garden variety cabbage loopers.DE,Rotenone.,any pyrethrum based insecticide or your favorite deadly chemical will kill them.Watch for plain yellow or white, medium sized butterflies. Those are the culprits.

come to think of it they did look the the creepys that get on my broccoli. These just seemed really, really long.

I had some dark colord butterflies in the green house before I saw the worms, so I'm not sure. I will let everybody know when they hatch. I also had Gulf Fritilaries on the passion vines. I just relocated them to some that had more leaves and wouldn't be hurt by the munching. The pet store sells butterfly caterpillar food and little cups to put them in and we've done that with a few cats we found, just to see what they were. I had 2 huge sphinx moths hatch out in the green house, not sure where they came from. They would crawl up inside the brug flowers.

On one Brug, I found several baby catapillars eating the leaves.. I had to take it off and stomp on it.. They are little blue, green. If I find it, and I will try to take picture of it and post it.. I am going to check the brugs tomorrow to make sure there's no catapillar eating.. Believe or not... I caught my ROOSTER picked some BRUGs leaves and eat it. He made some damanged on the leaves. Surprise me, he did not get sick or die by eating BRUGS since they are poisonious.... I had to cover the brugs if He keep eating them or I had to give him the dog foods often so he would leave my brugs alone!

My peacocks are like that too.If they get anywhere near my brug seedlings they snip them right off. They don't actually eat it though. They snip other seedlings too.My chickens seem to leave them alone.Maybe birds are ok with eating things like that.My horses eat poisin ivy and it doesent hurt them a bit.

CC, animals are like that. Some things that are poisonous to us won't hurt them and some things that we eat are harmful to them, like chocolate. Our goats (when I was a child) would eat poison ivy too.
