Propagating by cutting from a bitter Basil plant

Hi - I am brand new to gardening and this may be a very stupid question! But - My son's Basil plants seem to have gone bitter possibly from lack of pruning. If I wanted to propagate a new Basil plant from a cutting of the bitter ones, will my new plant have a fresh, sweet start or will its leaves be bitter too?
