Brachychiton Species, Australian Bottle Tree, Queensland Kurrajong (Brachychiton rupestris)
I have 8 of these beauties. The Brachychiton Rupestris is an incredibly hardy tree. It's very easy to transplant, even large ones. Five of the ones you see here were transplanted just 2 weeks ago. The 3 in the other pic were transplanted 18 months ago. I had a very small root ball, but they not only survived, but thrived. One of the first group (3 trees) lost its leaves for about 2 months. I thought it may have died, but it leafed out beautifully this past Spring. It's typical for them to lose their leaves, sometimes twice a year. When the new leaf growth starts they are reddish, then turn green. I get Temps down to freezing where I am in inland southern CA. I've planted protea around them to keep with the Australian theme.
