Zea mays japonica-Striped Corn

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

Just 'discovered' Japonica Striped Maize (Zea mays japonica), an ornamental corn from Japan with variegated green, white, yellow and pink leaves. Does anyone have a few seeds to spare for postage or trade? Thanks! John

Have you seen the Zea mays 'Quadricolor' in this year's Thompson and Morgan catalogue? Is it the same as what you're talking about? 'Cause I was thinking of ordering some. Where did you see it? T&M's ain't cheap!

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

Hi MsBatt! I saw mine, which may be the same as it is four colors, in Seed Savers catalogue. It is $2.50 for a packet, plus $3 p/h, if that is all one orders. I was a member of SSE at one time, and will probably order from them if no one has any to share. Plan to use them with Cannas! John

Yes, I think that's the same thing. T&M is offering 50 seeds for 3.99, and S/H runs $2.75 for up to $24.99. I hadn't gotten far enough to think what to plant it with, I just thought it was really neat.

I found Zea mays japonica in the Fragrant Path catalog for 10 seeds for $2.00 + $1.00 postage. It is also in the Select Seeds catalog--8 seeds for $3.00 + $3.00 postage. I can't find it in the new T-M. What page is it on? Sounds like something fun.

Thanks, talinum. The Fragrant Path sounds like a good resource. No website though... Do you know if they still have a $5 minimum order? John

According to my last catalog--2000 there was still a $5 minimum order.

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

Not sure which page, but it's listed with the ornamental grasses. I don't think T&M has a minimum order. Would anyone be interested in splitting a pack? $3.99 +2.50=$6.49 for 50 seeds, $3.25 for 25 seeds (2 people) or $2.17 for 16 seeds (3 people). Is anyone planning on ordering from T&M anyway? They always have a few things you can't find anywhere else, but you do have to pay thru the nose for them. (Like that new hollyhock, Creme deCassis, for instance.)

Kearney, NE(Zone 5a)

Found the picture--don't know why I didn't look under grasses. Sure I'll split a pack with you. Want anything else?

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

Count me in for a third of that pack! Thanks, John

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Can you add another pack? Maybe someone else would be interested or the others might want a few more seed. If you decide to do this let me know and I will get my part out right away.

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

How about this---anyone who wants in on this, e-mail me directly and tell me how many seeds/part of a pack you want MINIMUM and MAXIMUM. Let's say the cut-off date is 1/5, to allow plenty of time for the holidays, etc. Then I'll count up names and seeds and e-mail the details to everyone who's responded. Is there anything else in the T&M catalogue or the HPS Seed catalogue anyone wants to split? T&M is usually too high for my blood, but they have some things no on else has.

Pardancanda,

You may also be paticularly interested in the offerings of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds They have a variety called PAINTED MOUNTAIN that actually has cobs of black and white; red an white; white, red and black, and red and black "with many shades not available in other corns" You can request a free catalog here: http://www.rareseeds.com/

I just got mine yesterday!

MsBatt, thanks for setting this up. Will send you e-mail as requested.

Violet, thank you for the information. I have ordered their free catalogue. The corn I was interested in finding has ornamental foliage, which I thought would be a nice background plant. John

P.S. I did a search for zea mays Quadricolor, and found the linked photo, WOW!!! Funny thing is, I thought it was my bright idea to use as a canna companion... they suggest using it with Canna Tropicanna!
