Double pink club?

FSH, TX

Just a suggestion...but here is what I propose...everyone who wants a double pink and wants to work for it...ie hybridize...cross a dark pink or any pink to a Double white, double orange, or what have you. If any come up pink or in any color-you have to make it available to other members of the group. If all come up white one has to make another cross to a pink of some sort. If any come up pink you agree to trade this with the group for their pinks. Of course one can cross white seedlings with pink x double genes in hopes of getting a pink as well so trading a white seedling of say candida species x butterfly would still be appealing. I don't propose we do much more than a Candida species x butterfly x Rosabella though before we back cross to double orange or such to test for double genes. Once we know how many of the pink seedlings and which ones contain double genes as well we can cross those pinks to each other in hopes that some member of our group will get a double pink....which then has to be shared first with those that helped create the double pink. The Theory here is that with all of us working on it the chances are much higher that we will all get to create a double pink at or around the same time. I think members should agree to grow anywhere from 100 to 1000 seedlings in a seedtray and grow up at least 24% of them based on leaf characteristics or growth characteristics. Only using what bloomed in the first year would be a plus as well as that would be breeding for an early blooming seedling as well....Just some thoughts on the matter. Obviously, this would require all participants to have a double of some sort-a pink of some sort to cross it to and a willingness to share ones efforts with another. In the end, I think we should all be very open with each other concerning our numbers of successes ie color vs whites etc and any doubles arising even if white doubles....obviously, I ramble too much. Heck even if we had one double pink-things would be much easier, but I would so much like to see an aurea pink double, suaveolens pink double, etc....

I'm in! and Eric, the reason we wanted you to have the double pink is because we know you can do it! But I will hybridize my little brains out trying.

I'll try also. I've got a couple different doubles but only x knightii is still putting out flowers, it never stops. But only 2-3 at a time. Unfortunately I don't have any pinks with buds right now. I was going to cross the x knightii with Insignis Gold as it has flowers ready to pop. That's the best I can do right now. And I should have flowers on a suaveolens f. pink soon hopefully.

And if it doesn't work, well I've got my name down for a double pink from Monika in a few months. Either way we'll get one.

I have Harenhauser Garten and a double white(I think from Brugie). I HAVE Frosty Pink blooming and budded now, Isabella has tiny buds. I can send unopened buds if someone needs pollen(from FP). I don't have any doubles ready to bloom, it will be a while since these are babies.
Eric, how far can the pollen travel and for how many days? Do I seal the unopened buds in a baggie?

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

Me too - I want to play too. How do we keep track of this without having it spread all over the Brug forum on different threads?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

oh good point Liz, of course none of mine are blooming now, but surely someone will be able to start before spring.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I would like to try too have a double white candida and frosty pink still small cuttings but they will grow will also be willing to help grow a flat or two if anyone ealse gets seeds and doesn't have the room to grow them all.

I would love to try this too! I know you can freeze hibiscus pollen for about a year, can we do this with with brug pollen too?

Back to a question I asked before: will a single x double cross yeild any doubles or all singles that have to be breed back to a double???If only a small percentage will end up double than NO seedlings should be culled, right?

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

i have a pod forming on the candida double white that i crossed with ep. its about an inch long..if its survives the winter, i hope to get some to blooming size so that i can cross it back to the double white.
hoping and hoping for a doubles!!!

calalily, hows the herrenhauser i sent you doing?

Great idea, but I can't grow that many seedlings. Just no room when no greenhouse is available through the winter months. Good luck to all of you who work on this project.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

MsJen, it's growing. I've got it in a bigger pot now and it's still on the heat mat along with one I got from Brugie (foot tall now Brugie) and Eric sent me a start too.
When I first got yours, it wilted. I pulled it back out of the soil, soaked it in water for a couple of days and it took right off. When it filled the 4.5" pot with roots, I moved it up to an 8" pot.
If anybody needs some rooted Frosty Pinks, just let me know. I have a few that are rooted that I just moved up to 6" pots. (I was saving the big pots for the good stuff)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

CC, that's my biggest fear, that I will cull the wrong one!! I know Eric says go for growth, size and all that, but what if the one you cull was the one???? I see a need for a much bigger greenhouse than I expected:)

Personally, I like the Candida species x Ecuador pink cross. I have made that cross as well. I would keep the fastest growers for the first generation at least. If one only has one seedpod though you might be better off growing the whole seedpod. Frosty pink seedlings have all turned up white for me except one which was a yellow. I just haven't had much luck with that hybrid. Ecuador pink though, thats a good hybrid for adding color and when crossing to a white one would most likely want to go with a darker pink if one could find it. I like the Candida species x Frosty pink mainly because it throws in the suaveolens genes, but I imagine it would be a bit harder to work with, perhaps crossing it to darker pink the next generation though would yield some fruitful pinks. Frosty pink seedlings tend to be highly fertile and the added width of a suaveolens would be nice to throw in the mix of a double...I think a yellow crossed to a double should not be overlooked either though...especially when one has a limited selection. I am personally going to be crossing aurea yellow to Candida species and HG. I would love it others of you made that same cross as between the lot of us someone has to get lucky. Just throwing out idea's, but I think no matter what as long as we work on this together we will succede.

Jen,
Do you still have any of your double white x frosty seeds left? Looks like I might need some....the only thing I have blooming right now is a Whiskers....I have cut most everything up.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

waaaaah, I just cut Ecuador Pink back three days ago!!! I do have a few teeny tiny buds on Isabella, unfortunately I don't have a double anywhere near blooming.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

yup, will you be home tomorrow? i can bring you some after i hit the post office.
i also have a few of Monikas seeds i could give you if youre interested.
let me know
jen
do you still need the cuttings of whiskers?

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

I want in on this.I have several double whites and an HG plus several pinks to play with.I have 8 now with buds but no doubles budding.
Eric, you make my old brain tired :>)

FSH, TX

I see many of you have doubles, but no seedpods on your doubles. I will try to save a few seeds off of my double white for everyone that has expressed an interest in helping to create this double pink in a shared group atmosphere as soon as the next flush ripens...which should not be too many weeks away...knock on wood and keep the freeze from hitting us too soon.

(Zone 6a)

Eric....what is name of the double white and the name of the pollen donor....reference your above posting. I would love to have a few seeds if you are still talking to me:)

But really, I think we are all curious to know the parentage if we/they are going to plant the seeds:)

Owen
