solandra maxima-Brug cousin

Here is a picture I thought y'all might like to see of a Solandra maxima...it's in the Solanaceae family....for you that don't know that is the same family that the Brugmansia is in. This picture was taken the first day the flower opened and the flower got darker as the days went on. I think the flower lasted about 5 days and was a very dark gold color in the end....it is also called Gold Cup and Gold Chalice.

i got one of those in a trade this spring but i think the post office used the box as a football. when i opened it, the stem was completely broken. there was no reviving it. if i remember correctly, she said that the flower was a golden yellow.

Gloria, are you going to try and cross it with a brug?

Cala...to late now..it's finished blooming...never thought of doing that.

That's a beauty.I've never seen it before.

I got one of these in trade this summer, too! It has grown pretty fast, and I bet it will get even faster when I move it to a bigger pot come spring. Is it hardy outside for you, Glory? I feel sure it wouldn't be here, but once it gets bigger I'm going to try doing some cuttings to plant outside for the summer. Any idea how much cutting back it can stand?

Glory,
Those ruffles sure would look nice on an aurea for sure. I believe Native Habitat sells those as well. Perhaps another variety as well, not really sure as I don't have a current catalogue from them.

Mine is doing wonderfully! can't wait to see it bloom. I'll try the cross, but hope that someone else will too, maybe one of us will have some luck. Would love to get those stripes in a brug.

Gloria was kind enough to send me some cuttings of solandra maxima and they arrived today. I'm thrilled. I'll try and cross it with an aurea when it blooms. Thanks so much Gloria, you're very kind.

Judith,
Logees says this is a zone 10 plant....not sure how it will do in the ground here but I too am going to give it a try this spring....so far we have had no cold weather to speak of but one never knows. My vine only had two blooms so far maybe more will show up later. I also have the variegated leaf one but it doesn't root as easy as the solid green. This plant is now in the greenhouse. I will try and root some more and let all know when they are ready.
