Just wondering if any one else has ever had a problem after working in their brugs. I had been taking cuttings and general pruning in the brug house. I think I may have gotten some juice in my eye and now it's dialated. It has been for hours. It's about to drive me crazy. (well, not a drive, just a short putt) It also makes it very hard to see, one eye dialated and one not and looking at this screen is almost unberable. Help, what will make it go away?
brugs and eye dialation
Oh No Cala!! Rich Sanders had the same thing happen. I think he said the effect lasted for 24 hrs or so. Maybe you should wear sunglasses. I'm afraid there's nothing you can do to make it go away. If you haven’t already … flush your eye out with warm water.
Calalily, I have had this irritation before when handling a knightii, but not so severe as actual dialation. Just like a rash, very red and kind of looked like eczema skin for about a day. It eventually went away the next day. Maybe if affects each person differently and maybe depends on the plant, amount of juice and where it came into contact with you. I hope that its nothing serious, but just watch carefully and maybe a doctor's visit is in order if it doesn't go away soon.
/Regards Annie
thanks all, I'm going to go to the eye doctor in the morning if it's still dialated this bad. I wore sunglasses outside because the light made tears in my eye. All we had at work was natural tears drops. I try to keep saline, but it was out of date and I was afraid to use it. I was cutting mostly Jutner Orange, and I think when I looked up, it got right in my eye. I didn't think about it at the time, I noticed my vision was blurry, then my daughter came in from school. She said "mommy, what is wrong, your eye looks weird!!" I went and looked in the mirror and saw the pupil was dialated. I sure hope it's gone in the morning!!
So you have got the black eye, Calalily. If you can read it, I will tell you, that to me, at least, I would not take it so serious, but I advice you to go and see your doctor, if you have the slightest doubts about it. If you experience no dryness in your mouth, there is nothing to be affraid of.It happen to me frequently, when I am working in the Dats field and often, when I forget, that I am only supposed to rub my nose. Flush your eye with water and wear sunglasses. Light use to irritate my eyes so much, that I couldn`t keep them opened - and don`t try to read newspapers for a day or two. It will proberly wear off tomorrow, Calalily.
Belladonna were used in medieval times to create that same dilated look as it was considered more attractive. Brugmansia obviously has that exact same chemical. Can you believe woman did that intentionally in years past...just to look pretty?
Brugman
I can't imagine someone "wanting" this, it's very uncomfortable. Since I've been inside where the light isn't as bright, I can see better. My eye still feels "funny" but it's not painful. Thanks all for your help, I think I will be fine, just look funny.
I too can`t believe it *lol* I can`t either believe, that some types of men fell for that trick. It was supposed to simulate a kind of sexual arousal as rouge on the cheeks of women does (not simulate, but rather symbolizes) today.
Also anger of other strong interest can cause black eyes (Pupils covering eyecolor entirely).
I sometimes win a game of chess, because I follow my oponents eyes and note, where he have them, when the pupils dilate. It happen, when he sees an opening or think, that he can beat me off the bord in a couple of moves. But by then his way are already blocked.
This is due to the tropane alkaloids same as Belladonna that will dialate the pupils. Should go away soon but watch for secondary infection. Might see doctor to be on the safe side.
I read that one person had this 3 days, then was okay. To be sure Id go to the doctor.
I'm going to call in the morning. Thanks all.
Hope everything works out okay and you don't have to suffer with this long. We will all be thinking about you, so keep in touch.
Hope your eye is better tomorrow. Keep sunglasses on even in the house if you are around any lights.
Tonny
Much better. I'm waiting for the eye doctor to return my call as to whether I need to come in or not. It's not as dilated as it was and doesn't feel as "weird" as it did. will keep everybody posted as to what the doctor says.
Calalilly,
For what its worth, the eye doctor uses those same chemicals to dilate your eye when you go in for an eye exam. I imagine you had a larger dose than normal though and may need to reduce your contact with bright lights with that one eye-hence some wear a patch over the eye until the dilation goes down.
Hope you're ok calla
Ok
Brugman was right, well all of you were right. It's basically like getting ones eyes dilated. It has to wear off, no harm done. It's much better now, about half dilated.I've been wearing sun glasses and trying not to strain my eyes trying to see small things and also not rubbing it. Thanks all for your concern, remember when cutting the brugs, don't rub your eyes and when the plant is taller than your are, get a step ladder!! Safety glasses were also mentioned!!
sure am glad you're okay!!!
Cala, glad you're feeling better - by now, your eyess shuld be back to normal - and thanks for the tip on proper grooming/pruning brugs to avoid what you are going thru.
Get that eye back to normal so you can enjoy the rest of your Brugs in bloom!!! Take care.
A tidbit of info---the pupils of the eye naturally dialate slightly when one is pleasantly stimulated. Therefore, the reasoning when, when a man looked at a woman who was looking at him with dialated eyes, surely she must be liking what she saw---and what man doesn't like it when a woman looks on him with favor? (Don't answer that!)
Good on MSbatt...sheesh..you guys...
I just can't picture myself stumbling around half blind with dilated pupils trying to look sexy and get a mans attention. There must have been a better way even back then LOL
I agree, Snowhermit. Sometimes I think it's the plants who are doing sex right. (*grin*)
don't know about you guys but cleavage always works for me
Well, that explains it! I needed clevage!!!
Heck, I don't have any clevage, so I just leave my pants unzipped:) j/k
Thanks, Oblambert---I laughed until I cried over that one!
Is that 'cause of your hemmie's???
I see that Owen has been in that cake again!!
This is so weird, I had this happen today, looked at myself in the mirror and noticed that one of my eyes was widely dilated. I didn't have any other symptoms yet. Being an RN, I panicked knowing all of the things it could be, stroke, brain tumor, etc. . Called the Dr., called my BF at work and scared him, he mentioned something about did I rub my eyes with anything on my hands and that rang a bell with me, remembered about the brugs doing this. In all the time I have been dealing with brugs I have never had this happen. I just happened to do a search on brugmansia eye dilation and this thread popped up.
It does feel weird, though, vision is blurred in that eye.
I looked this stuff up
The leaves, stem, root and fruits of Datura and Brugmansia contain a battery of tropane alkaloids, the most potent of which are atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine. These alkaloids affect the central nervous system, including nerve cells of the brain and spinal cord which control many direct body functions and the behavior of men and women. They may also affect the autonomic nervous system, which includes the regulation of internal organs, heartbeat, circulation and breathing. One autonomic response of atropine is the dilation of pupils, once considered to be a beautiful and mysterious look in Italian women. In fact, belladonna means "beautiful lady," so named because sap from the closely related belladonna plant (Atropa belladonna) was used as eye drops to dilate the pupils.
This was such a great thread!! Thanks for bringing it back up again!!
I ended up missing a day of work a couple of weeks ago because i rubbed my eyes. My boss told "Jen, you come up with the best excuses"
What ever happened to Owen and his cake?? We've lost so many good ones.
Jen
The last time I talked to Owen, he told me that he and his wife aren't very well. Owen has some serious eye problems and a bad heart condition. He is still growing a few brugs and tomatoes, but doesn't have the energy he used to have. His wife also has heart problems.
Mary, the other night my husband called me in to look at my cat Gabby, otherwise known as Gabdelicious!. One pupil was totally blown. I freaked. I thought she had a brain tumor. But she acted so normal, even ate the chicken I gave her.
Then I thought how she followed me around all day and was often at my feet as I was pollinting . I figured she must have gotten some brug part in her eye. The next day the pupil was normal!
Here she is licking her chops after the chicken! Look at her eye!
Oh, my gosh..That's creepy! What a sight on a cat. I'm glad this thread was bumped, because I tend to rub my eyes a lot when I'm outside. I'll be more careful!
