Cestrum Nocturnum

Gilmer, TX

I guess this is the place to ask, since this plant is a member of the solanaceae family. I received a few seeds in trade and now I need to know what do I need to do to germinate them. Should I start them now or wait for spring. I have been starting seeds like a crazy women since I found out many must be started as fresh as possible. I don't think these are in the family, but while I'm here, does anyone have tips for Adenocalymna comosum, Podranea Ricasoliand, Combretum Red,Tabebuia Chrysotrhica, or Cuspidaria Convoluta. I hope I got all those spelled correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. P.

My Deno book says 8-10 days in 70º light (surface sow)

My AmerHort book says
for Podranea - 55-64º in spring
Tabebuia - 61º as soon as ripe or in spring

I couldn't find any reference for the others...

Thanks Poppysue, That's two I can save until spring. Right now I'm not starting anything that can wait. These are lovely and I didn't want them going to waste.

Arlene, do I just put them in a bowl of water until I see sprouts? That sounds too easy, but I like easy. No the only picture I have seen is of the red.. Have yours bloomed?

so sorry, catlady, i meant take cuttings from the plants. wish i had sent you some. i had a yellow next to a brug, had to cut it way back it was growing outward so much, clusers of yellow flowers, pretty.

Arlene, Sorry I missed those cuttings. Should I just start the seeds like I do my brug seeds? If I'm successful, we'll trade red for yellow cuttings next year.

I have the yellow & the red. Both are about 5' tall. I plan on cutting them back. So fr the above, sounds like I could just try to root in water. The yellow blooms fr Spring to Fall & the red is a fall bloomer & it is going nuts right now. Will send you some if the cuttings make it. Thanks again for the envelopes.

smockette, if you find yourself with extras and would like to work a trade, let me know:)

Smockette, I'll keep my fingers crossed for success with the cuttings. Glad to know the red doesn't bloom until fall, now I won't get over anxious waiting all summer.

Smockette, i have rooted the nocturnal in water, but not the others.... the yellow grew into my brugs and a rose bush, had cut at least 1/3 off it back since september, but gave the cuttings away at a trade. rooted that one in soil pretty easy, in the middle of summer. there is a pink also, so pretty, but that one didn't grow too much for me, maybe next year.

I work @ a tree farm & I looked the two up. The yellow is listed in the Farm inventory as auranticum. The red is listed as elegans. I know they can be grown fr cutting because we do it here at the Farm. Guess I need to ask my Prod Mgr when to cut & root them. I know we don't root in water here. Will let you know.
