Whiskers

Tonny
I have attached a picture of Whiskers which is an Aurea Gold X Charles Grimaldi hybrid That I grew ...the seed came from LBJ....this picture was taken when the plant was still a baby.

Arlene,
Is the plant you have a true offspring of "Whiskers"?

Thumbnail by Glory

Its beautiful Glory :) Thanks for posting it. I don`t know if mine is true offspring, but I hope so, when I see yours. The leaves have the typical shape of an aurea gold, but they also seems somewhat candida like (pubescent). How lon is its flower

Tonny,
I have a Whiskers blooming in the greenhouse right now...I'll go out and measure it.

(Zone 6a)

nice pic Gloria:)

anyone.....does the mommy brug's name come first in a cross or the papa's name?

In other words, if I pollinate Dr. Seuss with Isabella do I call the seeds from that cross Dr. Seuss x Isabella or the other way around?

Thinking about crossing lice with hemms. lol

momma first

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Gloria, i am sure it isn't a whiskers offspring. it is one of brugman's hybrids that i got from him in june, can't remember the cross, likely EP X DrS as some of the others are... i had thought maybe you wanted it for crossing with whiskers....
i haven't had luck in pollinating but my moths have. the bees were so thick this morning i couldn't make a good check for yellow peduncles.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Can't wait till next year when mine bloom maybe in the spring

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

me too irish, hope you get some pretty babies.

Arlene,
Oh, I thought it was a Whiskers offspring.

I will have Whiskers X ? offspring soon....I have two large seed pods on Whiskers right now...guess they will be called Whiskers Hybrids( Aurea Gold x Charles G. x ?)

Owen....get those hemms...LOL...you are too funny.

Tonny,
Whiskers is 7" long and 6-8" wide depending where you measure the width.

Thanks Glory :) You have been very helpful.

FSH, TX

7inches of visible or exposed corolla, or are you measuring from the beginning of the calyx? Just wondering....

Brugman,
I was measuring from the exposed corolla.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Such a beautiful flower with those long "thingys".Arlene will be proud of me for learning the new Brug language.LOL.
This one will be a must have for next year.

snowhermit - I have also picked up a little arlenish and am very proud of it too *l* Now i can say: - it has sure also have fine "hangies", Glory and exceptional long "horns" :)

- btw. was it also you Arlene, who also invented the "horns" and the "hockey-clubs" ? ... and who invented the skirt?

I think, that the first time i said horns instead of primarly teeth i didn`t even think about it. It just fitted better to my taste, that the usual terms and so it was natural for me to say it ... and much fun too :)

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

LOL Tonny. What scares me is that I understand Arlenes terminology much better than the proper wording plus it is more fun to use it. :)

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

SH and tonny, i didn't invent these words, have heard them from lots of people hear. the horns, i read as a translation out of hodnik's... i laughed out loud. it is fun to use these words. Snow, gloria has been so generous with whiskers i am sure a piece will find its way to you this spring (february here in florida). life is good. if the EP still looks good i'll take a pic, the flowers are about a foot from the ground, small plant.

Arlene - i thought you invented it *lol* I didn`t realize that it was a tradition :) - Well, still it make me laugh my whiskers of *l* "Viva Lé Traditiòn" !!!!!!!!!!!!

Snow,
If you remind me later I'll see if I can round up a cutting of Whiskers for you.....but you must remind me. :0)

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Arlene and Glory, Thank you. Now just to have the patience to wait for spring. Glory, you're asking the blind to lead the blind. I'm the one that goes to the store to get one item and by the time I get there I forgot what it was.But I'll try to remember. LOL. It's such a beautiful flower.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Hey glad to see I'm not the only who uses "brug terminology" so correctly.
Arlene (and all others with short term memory loss) you can use the "trade tracker" feature here to keep track of what you have promised. Wonder if Dave could put an "alarm" on it to go off when it's time to send something?

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

cala, do i owe you something besides seeds? email me if i do. seeds, crossing fingers, should start popping soon. i did pick three pods yesterday, for fun, i guess... some are kinda small..... probably not good.

Snow,
I have a small Whiskers in the greenhouse but it looks like something the cat dragged in....as soon as the seed pods ripen on Whiskers I'm going to chop it up in pieces and put your name on one. I'm going to see if I can figure out the trade trackers her on Daves...Cala I might need your help with this trade trackers.

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

jne

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i was offering her a cutting of it also. gloria, whiskers looks funny, i am going to take a pic....disease or virus? this virus stuff is making me nervous.

Ms. Jen, did you get my sase? just wanting to make sure.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

We're all virus paranoid! My cuttings are just babies... but I look every day for any signs. They were looking pale but I think aren't really getting enough light.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I've gotten paranoid too. I used some pyrethrum, and it damaged the leaves a little. I first saw it and it scared me, then I realized it was chemical burn. Wheeeeeew, heart skipped a beat for a few minutes. The new growth is coming out normal. I had mixed the powder too strong, I'm more careful now, but still keeping an eye out for anything that moves in there. (except the little wrens that have decided to call the Jungle House home, they can stay and the pyrethrum won't hurt them. Maybe they will eat a few aphids.)
Arlene
I don't think you owe me anything else now. Do I owe you anything? Glory?

Arlene,
My Whiskers is doing fine....as a matter of fact Mother/Father Whiskers is blooming right now. I am fighting whiteflies...they just love that warm humid greenhouse.

Cala...think we are pretty much even. I don't think I owe anyone anything but Snow and she knows Whiskers is coming.

Jen...I'll take some of your Whiskers if you don't have any use for it....can't get it till Wed. or Thur. Email me.

Snow...do you want some unrooted cuttings of Whiskers? Do you have a place to keep them this winter? LMK

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i probably have some kind of something...just pararnoid with this virus talk... almost everyone i look at now (slap my hand).

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

jen

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Glory, I e-mailed you.
Arlene, I e-mailed to you today.
You are the most generous bunch of people I have ever met.

Longview, TX

The Whiskers is just so beautiful. I love it.

Personally,
I love all of Glory's hybrids.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Glory
For the whitefly, try some Safer's insecticidal soap. If you have access to Merit, it will work too. I've been using the pyrethrins mixed with silicon dioxide and it works on everything!! (just must to rmemmber to follow directions and not burn the new growth)
I agree with Brugman, I love all of Glory's hybrids. I must also add that the people on this forum are wonderful!!

Cala,
I have been using the Safers but the little hummers are still there. Tell me more about Merit!!! What is it where can I find it? I am really getting a little sick and tired of the whitefly. Brugcrazy mentioned Endall but it's not sold in the US.
I bought a 12.00 can of pyrethrin spray and all I did was burn the leaves. I have tried just plain dish soap, all type of bug killers....everthing just short of the shotgun. LOL

Glory: If you order Encarsia formosa from a biological bug place, it works wonders for whitefly. It costs about $12 Canadian. The place here is called Nature's Alternative International Inc. Phone number is 1-877-930-BUGS. I don't know if they ship to the States. Try the phone number. If it doesn't work, email me and I will phone them and see if they ship to the States. These guys come on little cards that you hang from your plants.
