suaveolens pods

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

the suaveolens is funny, sometimes the calyx falls off and sometimes it stays on. this one couldn't make up it's mind, half of it fell off and the other half stayed.

Thanks for posting all the pictures of the different pods. I have only had pods on Jean Pasco, so it has been fun seeing what, if I'm lucky, the pods will look like once I get to work next summer.

cala, i can't tell, do those get pods get fatter at the bottom? gonna have to take a pic of mine...maybe the top halves didn't make seeds.

I will be more than happy to share my seeds when they get ripe. In fact, I will probably be begging you folks to take some of these. I can't bear to waste them and I know you guys will take care of them (and also share if you get something really cool)

You know I will share. Just have to hope I can get smart enough, quick enough, to hand pollinate and get the blooms covered before the moths hit them and make something I don't know about.

i was ripping the calyces off, actually i still do. bugs get in them and they seem to always be wet inside. and it is such fun... (i guess i am not supposed to).

Cala, OrphanAnnie just left, said she won't have time to stop at your place, well, it will still be dark when they go through. took her on a tour with a flash light. she is really nice and her DH must be too, was very patient. and a daughter as cute as a bug, naturally curly long hair. wish they hadn't been going to canada so i could have loaded them up.

I was so hoping they could stop. I will just have to send her some brugs in the mail. I hope you took pictures.

Arlene/Susie,

Why aren't you supposed to take the calyx off? I notice when I was lucky enough to have pods on mine that if I didn't take them off, they looked like they were going to mold. Just wondering!!

Eric recommends taking the calyxes off. I've tried, but they seem stuck pretty tight. Some of the suaveolens calyxes came off easily and I went ahead and took them off. I read somewhere that it allows the pod to develop faster if it is on, but can harbor diseases and pests/insects. I sometimes split them with little scissors so the pod can get air. I'm always out there snipping and tugging on leaves or old blooms. I can't leave them alone. If I go missing at the green house, they always know to look in the "Jungle House".

Thanks Susie,

I wondered because a couple of mine also looked to be strangling the pod. It got much fatter toward the base and was actually becoming deformed. That is when I started taking them off and you are right Arlene, there was a lot of moisture under them that I thought could create a problem.

i had misunderstood, i guess, cause i am sure eric told me it offered protection to leave them on but i had just taken the calyces off about 12 JOs, so much fun, and i have just found too many bugs, even little crickets hiding in there. right now i have what i think are stink bugs that love my seed pods!

brugie, i can't believe you were so lucky with the JP, i really like her a lot.

I left mine on,maybe I was lucky

Arlene,

JP is the one that provided me with the seed for Tragedy.
