Which potting soil

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

do you use for your potted brugmasia? I found one yesterday that seems like velvet. It's Ferti-loams Ultimate Potting Mix. It's expensive, but I'm seriously considering redoing all of my brugs in it. At the very least my Grade A ones. I have about 1/3 of them done now, and if I have enough to finish today, this much will be done.

Tig,
Metro mix 300, Miracle grow, and home mixes mainly. Of course I have used Petes as well. All good potting soil mixes. I personally like soils high in peat, perlite, vermiculite, coconut fibers, etc. Mix in a bit of manure. Some say guano others say worm castings, I say cow manure as its cheap and good. Throw a fish in the pot and call it good...or fish emulsion now a days.

Tig, i have bought two yards of soil from a local nursery since june. lots of wood chips in it, they seem to float to the top as a mulch. used to buy the expensive stuff. i pay $24.00 a yard, fills the back of the pick up. they sell to small nurseries and anyone who wants it.

do they sell it as topsoil?? I started the summer using a good topsoil in bag with about 1/3 compost and 1/3 peat. Loved it. Then I went to using perlite in my mix and now everything is heavy and stays soggy, so I'm having to change. I hate to spend this much, but my Grade A's are at least worth it. I think I'm going to go back to topsoil and peat for all my other plants.

Arlene,
Good note,
I bought a few truckloads of mushroom compost as well for around the same price to mix in my garden soil. Of course one can also get leaf mulch and such from the city for free to add as a supplement. While its generally high in weed content its superb if one can till it in or use it for the bottom 2/3rds of the pot. For potted plants and plants in the ground agrosoak crystals work wonderful as well. Although I tend to use more agrosoak in the ground outside then I do in pots. Pulling up all of my Brugmansia out of the ground not planted with agrosoak and replanting this spring.

No, they call it potting mix, i have been there when another small nursery went in and bought some. i really like it, rooting the baby culebras in it now. thought at first i would still use the other stuff, i actually have 1/2 bag left that i bought before my first load. i root a lot of plants!!! thought i might sell some, have given tons away locally.

okay, just finished off my fancy new potting mix and read the label and it's spaghnum peat moss and perlite. It does have wetting agents in it. Why couldn't I do this with just peat moss and perlite? Would that be too acidic for the brugs? Is there a valid reason for using soil?????? This mix is for all plants and the man told me that lots of pro growers use it.

Tig, i am wondering if maybe brugs like acid soil... sounds like a good mix.

all I used the beginning of the summer was 1/2 topsoil and 1/2 peat. They loved it. Don't know why I changed, I started adding compost and perlite and now the mix is terribly heavy. This is for potted ones of course. I'm going to take some Grade B cuttings and put them in peat with small amount of perlite to look like this mix and see what happens.

tiG.....what kind of topsoil did you use 50/50 with peat? just bags that say topsoil (but are really small splinters and charcoal)? I assume you are using spaghnum peat?

I use Shultz potting soil.....expensive but works great.

it was topsoil 98 cents a bag, but I bought Lowe's, didn't like hyponex and others. But mixed 50/50 with peat it was great. But just wondering about this new mix, which I really love, and why it's just peat and perlite and why I can't make my own, with no soil.

I have a source for mushroom compost. It has done absolute wonders in my garden. We have alot of clay. Is there any reason not to use it for my brugs? I'm planning to get another truck load next week. Also, can I put my new guys directly into the ground or should they stay in pots. I'm in SF Bay area. Thanks for any info...Shirley

tiG, I use ProMix. It is made of Canadian spaghnum peat moss and perlite.A friend that owns a commercial greenhouse got me started using it. I use it on everything, seeds, plants, hanging baskets, and cuttings.I buy it by the 3 cubic ft.compressed bale and it goes a long way. Everything grows great in it.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Shirley, if you don't have to worry about the frost and they are rooted i would put them straight in the ground.(not everyone agrees with this). very heavy feeders, they should love the compost.

snow, the guy that sold me this said it's almost as good as Promix and 1/3 of the price, so I'll just stick with this. It's the best I've ever used, never have used the Promix though.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

tig, Sounds like it is about the same as Promix. If you're paying 1/3 the price you got a good deal.I pay $20.00 for the 3cu. ft.bale which is over 50 lbs but it starts getting costly when I have to buy 3 at a time to start my seeds and plants in the spring.

snowhermit, you lucky girl, read a post about your DH buying you lights for your brugs... trying to find ways to get mine to help me!!!
