Brr - it's cold out!
Kathy Jo - I doubt that your heifers have to much padding. There was a small article in the paper a few days ago written by a Univ specialist on prewinter conditioning for beef cows. This spring a lot of farmers/ranchers had problems with calf scours, losing calves, etc. A vet friend of ours said part of the blame was on the condition of the cows. While he agreed that you don't want to get the cows too fat, if the cows aren't conditioned prior to cold weather, they will not be conditioned enough to properly support calves. Does that make sense? DD is learning about conditioning scores which is quite interesting.
There may be a reason for the black ones selling for more. Some of the packers now pay a premium if the slaughter cattle are certified Angus. We learned this from a 12 year old girl who dd shows cattle with. This little girl is so much fun as she knows so much about cattle.
Yesterday I had a "lucky" day - I won a Nebraska shirt. I was the 5th caller. I think it's a turtleneck - wish it was a t-shirt as dd had that on her Xmas list. I know - "beggars" can't be picky!
You all have a great day - stay warm/dry/safe, etc.!
