i know im supposed to peel off the outer corklike cover, but how on earth do i do that??

question
you might find it easier to soak and then peel. I've done it both ways. I like peeling first, but that's just me. I do it very carefully so I don't break the seed.
I don't think you have to peel fresh seeds, MsJen. i belive brugman told me that he never does, and maybe 1 out of 100 will have that thingy stick, and he can usually get those off. i am sure he will be by to confirm, but this is the gist of what he told me. just soak 24 hours and plant.
My seeds, even those left over seeds I found ,germinated ,and I didn't peel them, although some didn't come up......
I know he says you don't have to peel fresh seed. I've started 3 batches from him so far, and the ones I peeled had 20 times the germination rate. So it could be just me, I don't know.
Tig is so right.Peeled and soaked gives much better germination. This might not be true for fresh seed but it sure is for those I have purchased.
i give, i haven't started that many seeds but i remember soaking then peeling!!!! brugman just has a magic touch i guess.
okay, i soak then, lol
but scratchin my head...if i have to soak them to loosen the outer covering, why do i have to let them dry before i peel them?
jen
LOL...LOL....Jen you are so funny. I don't let mine dry before peeling them just be careful not to nick the seed inside the cork when peeling the cork off.
I peel what's easy to come off, getting close to seed, but not all the way. Then I soak and then it's easier to get the little bit left off the seed without breaking it. Just my way, if I soak then peel, I have a devil of a time trying to get all that stuff off.
Ms Jen: I soak all of mine and then DH peels them all for me as he is obsessive/compulsive and does a great job. Then plant them in starter mix in a tray with a dome over it. Keep them damp but not wet. They will germinate in 3 days to 1 year. If they don't germinate for me within 2 months then I usually toss them. Brugman says he has had to wait for up to a year.
And no bottom heat???? Thanks for all the seeds Brugcrazy, they're soaking. So you have 24 hours to get your DH down here to peel. I have your instructions in front of me - I know I can, I know I can.....
BOTTOM HEAT???
I have soaked all the seed I have been given or bought and I then peel them and I so been getting 90% range of germination.
I used some bottom heat on the ones I got from C.C. because it was freezing at nite almost down in low sixty's. but got 19 out of 20 come up
Pete
Irish, these cold nights are a bugger, aren't they? 5060s instead of 70s.... what beautiful weather we are having!
I've gotta laugh Irish - 60F is freezing? Ha ~~
Pete,
I see you don't like cool weather either. LOL
spoken like a true southerner, lol

I have tried peeling and not peeling. Bottom heat and just the right amount of moisture is all that counts. Other than that if the seeds are picked to early then you'll have poor luck or if the seeds are infested with bugs, or even the age of the seeds play a factor. I get much higher germination rates not peeling personally.
I've never peeled.I found some more old brug seeds from last winter.Maybe I'll soak and peel, sounds like something you do at a spa!!!LOL
My frist winter in florida I was wearing a T-shirt and every one was wearing fowel weather gear like I use to wear ice fishing in new England I laugh a lot that winter now I am getting it back after a couple of years working in 80 and 90 degree weather doesn't bother me but if its below 65 with any wind I am cold
CC, you are nuts!!! did you get the brugs???????
