Hello I live in British Columbia on Vancouver island and would like to know what type of spider I have found. I beileve it is a wolf or hobo spider but a definitive answer would be lovely.
Spider identification
Image quality is not sufficient for a positive i.d.; definitely NOT a hobo spider; although a wolf spider is a possibility, it also might be in the family Corinnidae - need to see the eye pattern...
Well, we can definitely rule out Corinnidae! I believe that this could be a fishing spider in the genus Dolomedes - see http://www.spiders.us/image/dolomedes-tenebrosus-11/ for an example.
very possible. If you can how would you keep this spider as a pet
I think this may actually be a wolf spider although the color is strange for a wolf spider the eye pattern matches one more then a Dolomedes
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/25/Hogna_lenta_18.jpg for example
I could not see the eye pattern clearly enough for me to be certain. I too have never seen this color pattern on a wolf spider. As you likely already know, wolf spiders (Lycosidae) and fishing spiders (Pisauridae) are closely related and can be quite similar in overall appearance.
