Lots of these caterpillars were found on an Acacia baileyana in a garden in Melbourne, Australia. Could someone identify the species?
CLOSED: Caterpillar ID
This is a tussock moth caterpillar (subfamily Lymantriinae of the family Erebidae; older literature will have these in the family Lymantriidae). Unfortunately, images of many Australian species appear difficult to locate - see http://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/lyma/lymantriidae.html for a list of species reported from Australia.
