About or nearly an inch long found this week in central Maryland
CLOSED: rove beetle? Maryland insect
It is indeed a rove beetle - looks like something in the genus Platydracus - see http://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=10641 for an example.
Thanks so much Flapdoodle! I don't remember ever finding one before. There are pics on that link that look the same and even one from my own county.
