Found this in my garden. It was very docile. I'm afraid that the photos could be better but didn't want to handle it more than was necessary. It had a black and yellow striped body but was not furry.

It's a horse fly (family Tabanidae); see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/144940403 for an example. Females are obligatory blood feeders that possess scalpel-like mouthparts.
According to my book of insects, the horsefly is not this big but you are probably correct. Thank you for your response.
There are species in the genus Tabanus that are larger than your specimen...
