My asparagus bed has produced all the spears it is going to for this spring. When I'm ready to plant the rest of my veggie garden, can I plant things in between? I know not to disturb the roots.

I have an old bed that I've tried to dig out for several years. Aside from trying to eradicate it with a shovel, the patch has been tilled every year. I've grown tomatoes and pole green and lima beans over it. The darn spears continue popping up here and there. I'm not sure I can kill it!
