There were lots of these crawling along a wooden guard rail in a somewhat swampy wooded area near Hilton Head, South Carolina in mid-November. They ranged in size from 1-1.5".
Can anyone ID it?

Perhaps a Fall Webworm - Hyphantria cunea?
It sure looks like a match to me; thanks, greenthumb!
I couldn't figure out why these caterpillars were crawling on the top board of the guardrail, but I thought they might be trying to get to the trees growing along the board walk,so I used sticks to move a dozen or so to tree trunks. I'm glad to hear that they're native.
