When can I transplant blackberry?

My thornless blackberry canes have put down roots where they have come into contact with the ground. We are going to be moving and I would like to take some of them with me but as they have not yet put out new canes from the rooted area I hesitate to dig them and pot them up for the move. Will they survive if I dig the new rooted sections at this stage, sever them from the mother cane, and plant them in a pot until I can transplant into the new yard? I have done this is the Spring after they show new growth but never at this time of year.

The best time to transplant is winter or early spring. You can dig up the plant when it goes dormant and put in a pot.

I may not have till winter before we have to move. Will it survive if I do it now or within the next 30 days? We are supposed to get some freezing night time temps for the next 4 nights.

I think if you dig it with a lot of dirt still on the roots it would be OK.

I moved a summer bearing blackberry in the fall with lots of soil around the roots into a larger tub - it is doing fine.
